Actually, it is nonsense that Atheists are disenfranchised from office, but it's just as nonsense to believe that there is absolutely no god.

You seem misinformed about what an atheist is. You mentioned two key words. Believe and absolutely. First of all, there are two major types of atheists, strong and weak. A strong atheist might fit the description you gave. They are the people that "know" or "believe" or whatever that God does not exist. There is not a doubt in there mind, they are sure God doesn't exist. However, weak atheists simply do not have a belief in God. They do not believe that God does not exist. They simply lack a belief in God. They also are not absolute. Most weak atheists follow pure reason and logic to draw there conclusions about God. It is from this that they do not have belief in God. However, if later in life reason showed to them that God exists, they would not stubbornly adhere to a "belief" that God does not exist, but adjust their position.Originally Posted by Da Skinna
I am a weak atheist, and my best estimate would be that the majority of TWC atheists are weak atheists as well.
And I could just as easily make the same statement you made. It would be nonsense if Christians were disenfranchised from office, but it is just as nonsense to believe in Christianity.
Okay, I've never heard the description you made, but to clarify, I was aiming at your "strong" Atheist, the weak one I've only ever heard described as a non-believing agnostic. Thank you for informing me though.Originally Posted by DarkKnight
I was actually wanting to add that it's nonsense to disenfranchise from office any people for their beliefs, but refrained for reasons beyond at me at this point. :hmmm:

I always thought a weak atheist was also known as an a agnostic...

I am a 'weak' atheist. I don't believe there is a God(s), but I'm not completely ruling out the possibility.

New dictionary entry: Disillusioned Atheist.
That's hilarious. In my view atheism is simply the opposite to theism.

Even if you acept that it's a nonsense belief, it's still not as bad as banning people from office because of their lack of religion.Actually, it is nonsense that Atheists are disenfranchised from office, but it's just as nonsense to believe that there is absolutely no god.
I do, it reminds me of "Asexuality is the opposite of sexuality. Atypical--typical, etc"

Thats also true by definition. In my view atheism is simply the opposite to theism.
I agree. An agnostic is a person who holds the view that god is unknown and is not commited to either believing or not believing in a god, a theist who admits he might be wrong is still commited to believing in one, but is only acknowledging the possibility that one might not exist, the vice versa is also true of atheists, we are still commited to not believing, but some of us admit that one might actuallly exist. If a theist admits that there is a possibility that he is wrong, does that make him an agnostic? No. So why should an atheist who admits the possibility of being wrong be classed as agnostic?
Same here, it would be foolish to rule out such a possibility, even though it is 1/infinity, im a very strong atheist, but I admit that I think there is a very minute chance that I might be wrong.I am a 'weak' atheist. I don't believe there is a God(s), but I'm not completely ruling out the possibility.

I am an atheist, although I do not discarding the possibility that a God exists, because, like you said, that would be foolish.
I am actually not opposed to religion at all, it is organized religion that I despise. Religion in principle is a beautiful thing, but human greed and hunger for power has corrupted it beyond repair.
You can also say that organized religion is human greed and hunger for power.Originally Posted by ZaPPPa
