Default Need help understanding where I can retrain certain units :)

    Hey guys,

I'm in an Eriador playthrough right now (just turned into Arnor) and I'm confused about where I can retrain certain units.

For example, Dundain Rangers are able to be retrained pretty much anyway as far as I'm aware and I have been doing so in Moria and various other places.

However, Battle-ready Dunedain pretty much have the same requirements and cannot be retrained anywhere other than Dunedain regions.

Could someone please explain this to me? It is quite confusing lol.

    Thanks!

Both of those units are recruitable and retrainable only in "dunedain" regions. In fact, if the game says something like "requires XXX region" then that applies to retraining too. It is possible to allow retraining in areas/buildings that do not provide recruitment of that unit, but vanilla TATW does not use this technique for any units.

I don't see how you're retraining Rangers in Moria, unless:
    1) you are not playing vanilla TATW
    2) you're confusing armour upgrading with actual retraining - where you're not replenishing the unit numbers, just giving them better armour

Like Withwnar said, there are 2 types of retraining... adding men and upgrading armor. You can upgrade armor anywhere but it will not replenish the men. You can only replenish the men in a settlement where the unit can be trained.

There is a third type of "retraining" which you may find useful, and which I use for Dunedain units. On the campaign map, you can drag the unit cards of 2 units together in the same army, and they will combine into a single unit (up to the max size allowed for that unit). In this way, you can bring fresh-trained Battle-Ready Dunedain from your home base to the front lines and replenish your veteran stack there without marching them back.

And if you really want to exploit this to the max, you could try it the way I usually do it with all my units, but especially the high end ones:
If possible, fight with armies that have a mix of fresh and experienced units of the same kind. After the battle you cleverly fill the ranks of the fresh units with the units that have more experience. This way you transfer experience to the less experienced unit. Try to keep about 10 men left in the experienced unit and send it (or more of them) back for retraining. This will give you more experienced freshly trained units that will only take one turn to be back at full strength. Being few in numbers they also won't cost too much, despite them having to travel to the barracks possibly having to wait a few turns before they can be retrained.
Depending on the situation you may have to make sure the traveling units won't rebel.
