Harmund viewed the young Lannister with a mixture of respect for his position, as was demanded, and fatherly concern, as Harmund ranked among the oldest and longest-serving Lords in the Westerlands at this time and his daughter was long Tommen's wife. Such a wedding day it was, all those years ago.
"Ah, Prince Aegon it was," said Harmund in a low voice with a nod of understanding, "The warrior over the scholar. Each had their merits, Tommen, I could hold no one at blame for selecting one over the other. The Realm needs strength now more than anything else, which Prince Aegon will deliver for certain. In the longer term, however, Aemon's wisdom may have proven a better guiding hand to the Realm than Aegon's martial prowess. Much will rest on the strength and influence of the Hand and Small Council: Aegon would do well to select a Hand who is his opposite, a man of temperance, to balance him."
He gave a brief glance around the room at the massed nobility from every corner of the Realm.
"I feel your choice was sound. Aegon's strength of character will bind this Realm to the Iron Throne. We need only hope he is fair and not harsh, decisive but not authoritarian."
Harmund could barely see the soon-to-be King as he stood at the head of the Great Hall, immersed in discussion with a number of people - Palace scribes, Septons, various officials, people needed to officiate the crowning in general - looking resplendent in his highly polished armour and much like his father in aura. A man like Aegon, with his strength, will force the Seven Kingdoms into line over such a disputed succession, but a man like Aegon also trod a dangerous line, and if he slipped into arrogant heavy-handedness, as so many of his type do, the Realm could well burn for it.
