Default DirectX 10 - This November

Yes, thats right, its coming. The first DX10 compatible graphics card, made by nVIDIA, is going to be released next month.

Heres the article for more info:

And here's some pics of the next Geforce 8xxx series graphics card:

I'm sure there is going to be a mid range Geforce 8600 or something like that.

Still seems like DX10 is a long way off from making headway in the market...that 7900 GTO is now looking like a better option than waiting for DX10 cards.

I agree. To make use of DX10, I'd need to upgrade my mobo, graphics card, possibly PSU and buy Windows Vista. Would it all be worth it for the presumably only rather small graphics quality improvement and CPU load reduction you would expect to enjoy from such a new card?
Doesn't it make more sense at the moment to stick with the high-end current generation of cards?

Well, it's got Unified Pixel Shaders, so you'd need to buy a new card sooner when the Shader Model 3.0 becomes old.

I think we can probably hold off on buying DX10 cards for quite a while. Given the crappy performance of Vista's latest release (in terms of gaming), and the time it will take before Vista is even prominent in the market place, I would still go for a DX9 card today, and maybe upgrade in a year or more (and that would be a stretch IMO). Clearly nvidia is making a purely marketing move with their DX10 cards...I have read that DX10 is not be backwards compatible with DX9, which makes buying the 80 series something to do only for bragging rights until the card can actually be used... It may be several years before Vista becomes the dominant OS in Windows based PCs, which means XP/DX9 PCs/games still have quite a bit of shelf life.

I agree. Also, the current and next gen consoles are based on DX9 hardware, any cross platfor developing will make DX10 a hinderance, and console games sell more than PC games.

Dx10 cards can't run Dx9? That means that if a game doesn't support DX10, you won't be able to play it in Dx9 on a Dx10 card? That doesn't seem likely to me. Linkage?

DX10 cards should still be able to play DX9 games, I read some where that the first generation DX10 cards is supposed to be a hybrid of both.

And I suspect most DX10 games wil also have an additional DX9 codepath, so you can play them on older hardware too.

This seems the most logical thing. I really coundnt imagine people buying DX10 if thier DX9 only Christmas blockbusters couldnt run on the thing. Although I read that DX10 is quite significantly different from DX9, it would make a lot of sense for DX10 ot still work DX9, people still liike to play thier old games, and these old games would include games like MTW2 and HL, im sure MS and publishers dont want to alienate such a large proportion of thier customers.

Yeah, I've read both sides of the story as well, but I haven't seen anything official from MS on the subject. I mihgt have been too hasty with my comment on compatibility.

I sure hope they come up with a more ... edible main stream version. That thing isn't merely a beast. It is a monstrosity that I would never allow in my pc. Are they mad?

Clearly then I was too hasty in asking for a link backing up your statement. Although that's not to say I don't enjoy googling random information people on this forum state as fact. Why ask questions in a discussion?

    Thanks for the Google tip.

DX10 is not backwards compatible with DX9. DX 10 cards will however be able to run DX9 games - which is where my misinterpretation stems from. No need to be a jerk about it - the last time I checked, people are premitted to be wrong about things once in a while. Thanks for coming out

I heard from the wiki page that news was leaked like this, and the GT version will be $450-499 and the GTX will be $600.

I agree, good sir. People are permitted to be wrong once in awhile, but don't link me to Google when I asked you to back up what you said. That's what forums are for. Anything negative you sensed from my post was only in response to your second comment.

Back on topic, some newer games coming out are going to be available in both DX10 and DX9. For example, Company of Heroes will have a DX10 mode when it is available for use. Crysis will be the same, and I'm assuming most high end PC games will be able to scale up or down if your hardware is capable.

Im looking to buy a new PC rig next year with a combo of Vista and DirectX 10 stuff for next gen PC gaming but I dont want that black thing in my case!
Real shame if it will be impossible to play older games on DX 10 hardware. My PC just isnt the same without Operation Flashpoint (and thats a DX 8 game, will 8 be supported ?)
