Default What happened to unwalled siege battles?

So I just got back to Rome 2 having been on a hiatus since September and I'm enjoying it. However I've initiated several siege attacks on minor settlements only to be greeted with a standard land battle. I don't like this and I'm wondering whether a patch did this or have I missed something? Why would CA do this since it makes it even easier to steamroll minor regions and are there mods that change it back to how it was before?

Since about patch 5 or 6, you and the AI have the option to fight the battle in the settlement or to sally forth from the settlement to fight the battle in open countryside. This is a choice you and the AI can make when you enter into the battle screen.

Can the attacker chose to attack on the field? or only the defender?

So is the game generating a random tactical map of a field battle ?

If AI always use the sally feature, attacking minor cities will become useless. The reason you attack a minor settlement is because you want to attack them at their own city.

Question: Cant CA just remove the capture point in sieges? Cant they just attack me outside their settlement? Their settlement must still be a part of battlefield. It must depend on the ai whether to sally and retreat in their own city if its necessary.

They sally forth if you have superior ranged capabilities or just straight outclass them. So you're probably only running into that because obviously strategically you're not going to attempt to assault a settlement if your enemy is stronger than you. Kind of a crap feature if you ask me, I don't understand why they just didn't make the AI attempt to engage you in the siege map if you outclass them.

Thing is the last time they sallied I didn't have superior range or outclass them in general, the bar was well in their favour and I ended up losing the battle. Even in multiplayer campaigns the player playing as the AI can't choose to engage within the settlement.

I wish CA would prevent the AI from being able to sally when I am attacking them. They can sally when it's their turn, like how it's always been. Since they removed baggage train battles, and now this we are down to fewer battle types than before. I like variety.

Try getting multiple armies to Be attacking when you lay siege. Worst case scenario is you have them surrounded on the pitched battle with 2 or more generals getting xp.

I think they, and you, will always sally forth if you or they are in "forced march" stance.
