How do you deal with enemy agents?

So I'm playing my first real campaign of Rome2, and I'm having a major problem with enemy agents! I'm playing as Pontus, and have successfully set myself up a nice little empire of two complete provinces, and a happy alliance with the Selucids.

My problem is enemy agents. About 4 of them are wrecking me. Just last turn I had three settlements completely devastated by enemy champions! It's crazy. My spies and champions are on anti-agent duty, but the amount of damage I'm taking is completely ridiculous. I find myself needing to spend upwards of 2-3k on repair bills every turn. I manage to kill at least one enemy agent every turn, and ideally put another out of commission for a bit, but they just keep coming back in such numbers that I'm completely overwhelmed. My empire is being destroyed by just a handful of jerks!

Are there any other preventative measures I can take?

Look on the bright side. This is it. Enemy agents burning your cities is the biggest challenge you will face against the CAI for the whole campaign. They're not going to stand and fight you when you invade their territories or anything. They'll be slipping away onto the water and traveling to distant shores, living to fight another day as a stateless horde or whatever. Agents are the game challenge the AI provides. Not my cup of tea but some people like it, apparently.

You can try to win their hearts/bribe and make work for you.

My recomendation is to convert them to your side. After a while your agents will outnumber theirs and be able to keep them away. Some temples offer buffs against agent actions. But the trick is getting the buildings built while under attack from the agents

Also I beleive there are mods getting rid or lowering the effects of agents.

I fear that's where I'm headed too. I WANT to like this game ... it's RTW after all! But there is just too much idiocy for me too deal with.

My recommendation is to find a mod that vastly reduces the AI agent budget, and hope the AI starts fighting.

I'm particularly fed up of never seeing an enemy army, but having 5+ enemy agent actions wrecking my cities each turn, and that's early-game.

I find it annoying, but not crippling. It definitely slows down my growth dealing with them, and sometimes I'll spend my entire years income on agent actions to kill or manipulate agents, but it isn't breaking my games so far.

I try to turn all their spies to my side, and kill the rest.

Play diplomatically... what I found is even if i have a distant enemy that in previous games wouldnt matter... in Rome II they can send agents to pick on you... I try to only have one going enemy at a time... if i have to fight a coalition i make sure i have a suffecient amount of allies to go against them with.

Just go to the steam workshop type in no agents and you will find several mods that will fix this and you can start enjoying the game again.

Specialize your agents in defecting......make enemy agents defect......then profit as now you have a agent army....

How does one make successful agents defect?
If they're so good at their job, why would they leave their pay and master behind?

^^^^ I have often been surprised, after being rather desperate due to the onslaught of agents, at just how many very high ranking spies etc I have been able to convert with my very lowly ranked agent. I have got many ten star spies converted to my cause with not a great deal of trouble.
The difficulty level has given me some thought to believe that can influence the agent attacks, playing as the Romans on the hard level will tend to mean that most Germanic etc factions encountered will soon start to hate me and thus I become a target for attack, both with agents and them ganging up on me.
Playing the same Faction on the normal level and it is much easier all round, in not dealing with their agent spams etc.

Building certain buildings can help with a province as a whole with security, as well as cultural conversion and public control order etc.

I am playing with the beta 9 patch and using a 4TPY mod and the TTT mod, for additional traits etc.

use a mod,in fame levels set numbers of agents to 1 ,it ends the spam.
