    Default Upkeep

Figured I'd post this here, since I'm not sure whether or not people really check tech support (and I'm quite annoyed I can't play Rome)

    Hello gentlemen.

In a thread I posted some time ago, I explained an issue I was having with the upkeep of my armies. Wherein the upkeep of my armies was improperly calculated. (resulting from me having used console commands to gibe money).
Since that time, I have got a new computer. My first move was to install R:TW and RS2.
I jumped in the game, and checked my financial scroll - Projected income -60000 (Roughly)

So I'm flummoxed. I did some testing and this only occurs in RS2.

    What do?

Further testing seems to indicate that this only affects the Roman campaign. This leads me to believe that the script (or whatever) for the Roman Campaign is utterly boned. Which makes no sense, because this issue has persisted through a new computer, and a completely fresh reinstall of both RS2 and RTW.

did you pass the turn? i've never learned to read the financial scroll, plus none else here is having your problem: assuming the installation is ok, i'd suggest you to play the campaign anyways and see what happens

    It fixed itself.
    What in the ?

I just loaded it up, went into the financial scroll to take a screenshot, and it was normal.

Normally, I would be several thousand in the red, with an army upkeep of some 65k.

Could you please take a screenshot of the financial screen on turn one of a roman campaign, so I can compare?

    And here's the second turn.

Still, the upkeep seems crazy high, and IIRC, I should be earning more.

Because you're interested, you may find the information the attached file useful for comparisons.

Whilst tone tweaked finances, I tested and reviewed the results - and that's what the zipped spreadsheet shows, along with some interesting graphs - and this is how we balanced the Roman campaign.

I think you will find that there is nothing wrong, and the only thing you are finding an issue is that your army is simply too large for your empire to support easily and still allow economic investment - which is all pretty damn realistic.

Anyway - you might just want to see; the figures are representative, but can be used to chart progress.

    Many thanks, Tedric.
Things seem to have worked them out now.

    Hi,

BTW, what is the last line in the income/expenditure section (below diplomacy/tributes and above the line)?

The 'last line' and the diplomacy/tributes area I spent some time confirming what it is (when most people don't have either most of the time)....

The '..1.............................0..' and the '..0.....................0..' lines are only when you activate the script and you get the 1d added (and it pushes the other figures down a line)

But the figures you normally see in that line are all the bonuses from Governors and represent the sum of the 'Admin scroll' bonuses (+ve) and the total Corruption losses (-ve). So, all the +ve TAx effects are seen there and not in 'Taxes' which represent the base. Thus, the Admin bonuses drop when a new Governor (normally) is appointed; and the Corruption figures are high before you finish pacifying the settlements and build those Law buildings.

RS2 is\was also configured economically very different than any other mod for it's time....others have followed the lead somewhat, but here is a brief explanation of why the normal RTW figures can be skewed.

Normal Vanilla RTW gives income almost solely by means of trade profit, which is coded into various buildings you or the AI build. The problem with that system is that it 'cascades' throughout the campaign as you take more and more settlements...until you have so much money that no one can really stop you, and you have no worries about finances. This idea is totally unrealistic, as building and maintaining a large empire was vastly expensive, and often disastrous.

So we altered the way the game gives the player money by focusing heavily on the importance of 'taxation' as opposed to trade. Trade is now a more 'static' figure than grows only very slowly...with bonuses given only in certain buildings and places. Taxes are more important, but they are also dependent on a percentage of trade. So in RS2, you can actually spend yourself into a hole for a few turns because you spend more money than you actually have coming in. Then you have to be more frugal for a few years to make up for that over-spending, and for the economy to 'right itself'. This was all intentional, and makes it so you have to really focus more on building up your nation's economy AS WELL AS conquest....otherwise, you'll have no money for conquest.

Needless to say, the larger your empire gets, the more taxes you'l take in, but it can be more difficult to have as much as you really WANT, and much different than the Vanilla way of piling gobs of money on the player.
