    Default Fantastic!

I've seen lots of threads called "wtf help! teh mod don't work no more!" so I just wanted to say that this is one of the best mods I have ever played. I bought BI and hated it. It wasn't that I hated the timeframe, (I kinda like the idea of holding the lines and rejuvinating an exhausted Empire ) but vanilla was poorly made, neon-colored and BORING. WRE wasn't that hard, Barbs were lame, boring, and unthreatening, and all the units were recycled RTW ones. I tried other BI mods which were good, and went a long way towards fixing it up for me, but none of them ever really broke that problem that kept me from really enjoying it: WRE was still the same excersice in patience not a test of risilience and skill. All you had to do to win was let towns rebel, spend 5 years surpressing revolts and emerge as a super-power just in time to rebel all invasions and emerge as the sole super-power....BORING!

But now, I'm still struggling in my WRE campaign! It's fantastic! I lost Rome in 410 to Alaric (I heart realism ) but sent one of my Italian legions south and it defeated about 3/4 full stacks. Now there are still 3 stacks wandering around but I'm hoping to finish those off shortly. All Africa revolted so I pulled out from all but Carthage: my plan is to hold Hadrumentum, Carthage, and Hippo Rhegius and transport all soldiers in Africa (once you pull all garrisons (town + fort) into the field you have like 3 full stacks ) to Italy or Gaul. I'm slowly regaining control of Gaul and trying to avoid the Vandals in Spain by evacuating any town they try to invade, hopefully they'll move on to Africa soon... :tooth:

But of course, there are other problems: I sacked the Allemani's capital so they horded but now they've come back and are re-entering Gaulish lands! The Huns are getting dangerously close to my border forts and the ERE has blockaded a couple of forts. Not to mention my bank account is around -300,000...uh oh

all in all, this has been a challanging, engaging, (accurate) and great campaign experience and I want to say how great a job everyone did in making it. Pat yourself on the back because you've made the best BI mod (hands down) and I for one have not had any bugs at all!
    Thanks a lot!

Glad you like it! And you'll be happy to know that we plan on making the WRE even harder in future versions.(I.e Better Gothic and Vandal hordes, less starting armies ect.)

Since playing the WRE is so hard as u say imperator, then i hope that if u do somehow win you could maybe post a WRE walkthrough??? I swear i won't look at it for a long time, but i think after losing a few too many times (i know i will, never was good with WRE in any mod), ill probably would like some help. You or the guys who actually built this mod should do something like that for those of us who aren't quite as skilled at keeping a failed empire alive.

    Hi Myr,

My advice, for what its worth is to do the following as the WRE. First pick one area to "hold" and focus all resources into that area. Any cities that you know are going to rebel, just set taxes to max - you'll lose them regardless, may as well get your money out while you can. Next destroy your entire fleet (maybe keep a ship for short transport duties) to save on upkeep. Destory all barrack buildings in any of your regions that are not in your "main area". I usually pick Italy to be my main area to hold. Historically it is the core and also it has good economic potential and can be easily defended once the hordes are destroyed/kicked out. Just rebuid your limes and hold the Alpine passes. Then, Turn 1, attack, attack and attack any and all enemies you can. This serves 2 purposes (a) it hurts your enemy (b) any losses suffered will reduce your military upkeep. As time progesses, focus all resources into your "core regions" and you should eventually be able to have a strong foundation from which you can try to regain your empire. Another option is to to most of the above, disband nearly your entire army (after destroying any nearby enemies) and reduce your upkeep, leaving only 1 good field army to fend off any nearby enemy forces.

All you have to do is to reduce your army size. When you begin you have Two armies in italia. Bring comitatensis units from cartage and sicilia, attack the visigoths as fast as you can and sack Arles. In those cities you can control, like NorthAfrica destroy every biulding and you can do nothing about Toletum too, so bring down every building. Leave Hispania to its faith, from there on move round gaul sucking each city in turn, begin with burdigalia.
I am in the year 431AD, gaul is under mine control, half of Britannia has been conquered and Hispania almost. The Vandals hold Beatica, the Visigoths are only a sour memory, but then remember to be vigilate , Burguridians , Longobards and Osrogoths will try to enter, destroy them.

At about 422Ad there was a withspread revolt in Hispania against the Vandals, but still they are a menance.

One last hint, group all your cavalry units in one army, you will have a very mobile force to move around. Never used them on their own but as part of another army. Field armies in the late Empire where quite small so use a Prima Cohortis with 2 Plumbatarii (always in the middle) 4 Comitatensis units in the front and two Lancerii with another Comit. or Pedites Bucellaii on the rear. The rest skirmisher units, foederati and archers. The barbarians are to be sacrified. Remember that the legions have few equals on the battlefield.

    Cheers.
