Windows 8.1 Woes

So I decided to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 today, terrible mistake . While this isn't just a problem with my TATW (with DaC) I don't know where else to put this. The mod starts up fine whenever I try to continue a campaign or start a new one after the loading bar the map pops up for a second with what looks like the shortcut help menu open as well as the cheat tab (I'm not too sure, it happens very fast) and then one of two things occurs. Either the program crashes immediately or it reverts back to the loading screen and gets stuck in an infinite loop trying to load a campaign. This happens in all of my mods and even vanilla M2TW . Does anyone know how to fix this or should I delete all of my mods and try to reinstall Medieval 2? Thank you

Update for anyone who might install 8.1 in the future: so I deleted all my mods and completely removed every M2TW file from my computer and did a fresh install and that seemed to work at the cost of all of my save games . But the vanilla game is working so hopefully that means mods will be fine as well. Spread the word, don't upgrade to 8.1 unless you backup all of your saves!

For the record, I upgraded some months ago to Win 8.1 and encountered none such problems. The backup off all of your saves tip is good advice however. I even have them included in an automated backup routine that copies them to another disk. This way even a crashed install disk won't prevent you from eventually finishing that great campaign in which you already had invested countless hours of play.

There is a workaround for this: Install M2TW anywhere else, just NOT in your Program Files or Program Files(x86) folder.

Honestly I have never seen a bug like this before. Most of the time, the game didn't close out, the cheat bar and the hot keys menu just wouldnt go away and it was impossible to do anything really, same problem when doing a custom battle. But I'm glad it worked fine for you. I'm in the process of downloading all my mods again and I'm happy to say they are back to normal. Thanks for the advice though guys!

Have windows 8.1 here not a single issue. Delete everything correctly, clean traces and install game on a folder like d:\games\medieval2 and should work well.

1) Install your M2TW+Kingdoms anywhere else on your PC, just not in either Program Files or Program Files(x86) folder. After installing it, test can you start a campaign in both M2TW and Kingdoms.

2) Install TATW 3.0 both parts +TATW 3.2, all TATW Installers have to have \Medieval II Total War as a Destination Folder ( for example, if you had installed M2TW+Kingdoms in D: Games\ SEGA, then, your Destination folder MUST be D: Games\ SEGA\ Medieval II Total War ). Just use the BROWSE button during the installation, and navigate to your M2TW location.

3) For battle crashes, disable-turn off Daylight Saving setting ( link).

You mean that you have Windows 8.1, and Steam M2TW version? If that is the case, install/download your M2TW/Kingdoms anywhere else on your computer, just not in your Program Files or Program Files(x86) folder. After installing it, test can you start a campaign in both M2TW and Kingdoms.

but i dont want to install third age andi tried move my steam outside of profgŕam files and it doesnt work. so i try reinstal it

I don't get it.. If you are not trying to install TATW, then why are you posting here in TATW Tech Help forum? What are you trying to install/reinstall?

If you are experiencing problems with other mods, and not with Third Age TW mod ( which, as you say, don`t have installed, and, do not intend to install), then please make a thread/ or post in that mod`s Technical Help Forum.

Did you perhaps use Internet Explorer to download the file? IE is known to cause partial file downloads.. I would suggest to try downloading with Mozilla Firefox or Chrome, or Opera. Good luck!
