M2TW crashes when I start it. What haven't I tried yet? STEAM + Win7
Hi guys!
Sorry for starting another what-do-I-do-thread, but I've gone through all info I could find and I can't seem to solve the problem.
I bought Medieval II: Total War + Kingdoms on Steam, installed it, installed mods (TATW + Westeros + Warhammer), played it for a month or two. Then it crashed, giving me the "...have encountered an unspecified error and will now close" pop-up. I couldn't fix it at the time so I decided to just reinstall everything. So I did, and I still have the same problem. Doesn't matter if I try playing mods or the regular Med2 or Kingdoms. It will show me the initial loading screen, then go into the intro movie for a second or two, just show the THX -or whatever it is- logo, and then I get thrown back out and get the pop-up.
I've tried to do the verify game cache integrity-thing, and every time it shows "1 file was not able to verify".
UAC is disabled, and as for TATW issues, the daylight setting is also off.
I know I did more than this to make sure, but it's getting late and I can't get my head around it right now. But is there someone who've had this problem, and solved it? What did I miss?
The only thing I'm new at is STEAM, this is my first experience with it. So maybe I missed something useful when I reinstalled it?
Thanks for the help!

What version of Windows?
When was the last time you ran disk cleanup and did a manual deep optimized defrag?

http://www.iobit.com/iobitsmartdefrag.html The free version works great.
Have you taken ownership/control of C: drive?

Ok.. So I'm back. I tried the defrag and did another virus check. The defrag took awhile and had a lot to do so it was due time, but it didn't do anything for the M2TW launch problem. Might it be that every time I reinstall the same problem stays with me because Steam has saved some of the data for future use? As I said I'm new with Steam so I might have missed something very basic..
