You just need to accept that that game (Medieval 2) had better siege AI than Rome 2 and there is 8 years gap right?

rage renewed.
The torches confuse AI.
I don't know why CA insists on keeping torches so much. They only work in deterring the AI. In older games there were no torches, so the AI had to look for 'alternatives' and use them. Without torches, AI had no option other than using ladders/rams/towers to scale the wall and get inside, and so it did use them. Here, the AI is distracted because it has unlimited torching ability, so it doesn't bother with engines and just runs to burn the gate, because there is no need for ladders/towers as an alternative in AI eyes. If CA removed torches, we would see far more use of siege engines, because they'll be the only alternatives left.
Or probably not, because AI is scripted and doesn't know how to get anything more than one unit on the wall per ladder/tower. Or perhaps because it gets stuck with the engine in the little slums outside cities. In the end, if CA insist on using them, it shows the level of utter incompetence in the AI and pathfinding departments.

Believe it or not, the AI actually prioritises siege equipment over torches. It's just that broken that it's not doing it properly.
Secondly, removing torches with a mod...does not remove torches. The AI can still torch your gates even after your remove them from the game.
Waddup xD
The only games before this that had true sieges were on a totally different engine.
No game on Warscape has ever had sieges that work well. Frankly, I am just thankful they didn't think up some excuse to give every unit the magical ability to climb walls.

Path 9 is official, I tested it and this is what I observed. A siege custom battle as a defender with the AI in very hard difficulty.
Initially the AI made use of all their siege engines. I gave them one heavy battering ram, two medium siege towers and three ladders.
They scaled the wall and after that never reinforced them because they were still busy with their torches.
As their battering ram drew very near to my gates, I had one cohort out to sally, the unit with the ram just barely set it just outside the gates as my sallying cohort eliminated them then I brought the cohort back into the city. However, the AI, instead of reusing the ram, they did this;

They burned their own battering ram which ironically shielded my gate from their torches.
They all stayed busy with it till they were all shot dead by the gate towers. They could not burn down the gates because of their burned down ram blocking the way.

It's really stupid and quite funny. The AI still had five units left including their general. At first I thought they were taking up the same position in torching the gates but they were heading to the nearest siege tower.

They started climbing up, but when they reached the second tier of the siege tower they jump back down and started running around it. Then all of a sudden

I'm starting to think that fixing the AI will never really happen.

Yeah, I've come to accept this now. After 5 months and 9 patches the siege AI is still dreadful (again, I'm playing BI, and siege battles are more fun in that) The field battle AI is great, but if the sieges are so bad that they're not even funny then I just can't play the game. With the time frame and number of patches in mind, plus having read many modders post about how the mod tools have fallen short of what they were hoping for, I've just given up on Rome 2.
Cost me £30 and waited a helluva long time for it, but the simple truth is that I just don't think it can come close to delivering what I wanted. I imagine that they're going to stop patching after a couple more; if mods can fix the AI and pathfinding then I don't see it happening for 1 year+....but it's more likely not going to happen. Rome 1 and EB, Barbarian invasion, M2TW and Stainless Steel all the way for me.
Why they are standing after failure of the ram? Can they program them to run back and not get killed by the towers ??? o.O

Wow, I just noticed it looks like there are ladders on the back of siege towers now?
So the troops don't even climb up through the tower any more, they just climb ladders on the back?
The game development business is one of bottomless greed, pitiless cruelty, venal treachery, rampant competition, low politics and boundless personal ambition. New game series are rising, and others are starting their long slide into obscurity and defeat.
Towers are essentially reskinned and remodeled ladders with extra armour and more broken pathfinding.
Compared to the real ladders in RTW and Medieval II, which didn't have wheels and a mounting base and had to be picked up by troops, and they were like real ladders and not an ugly climbing base to the walls.

the Romans actually did make ladders like that but I don't think they are ever recorded being used until the siege of Jerusalem in the second Jewish revolt so way past rome 2's timeframe.(ironic considering you cannot siege Jerusalem)
But there would just be no point n making those kinda ladders for a barbarian oppidum
Impossible to play this game without a decent siege AI. When you see CA deploying the mod tools, you know that the patches are coming to an end. R.I.P. Rome 2.
Work of God
I wish is was not true, but Turbo hit the nail on the head. RIP. It is too bad too, I have waited years for the sequel during this time frame. What a waste.
I don't know why anyone is even surprised? It has been obvious for months that whatever CA does with siege AI fixes myriad issues remain. This antiquated engine was on its last legs and should have never been used for this game. CA knew none of this BS worked correctly from day one, but went ahead with their grand plan (operation torch) anyway. I am sorry, forgive me for wanting a game that works "most of the time." One does not even have to try to break the siege AI, it is functionally dim; should be a disclaimer on every site selling this piss cat garbage. "What would you like in your bottomless shaft drink sir?" I will have more DLC, I love it in my broken glass half full! Can we get another Rally point episode? God I love those, and Usury too! So much fun, yeah celebrate blatant fraud!
