I'm not sure if anyone knew about this, but while randomly browsing Wikipedia, I discovered that there will be a film version of a graphic novel called 300. It's about the battle of Thermopylae, as seen through the eyes of King Leonidas. The graphic novel is by Frank Miller, the author of the Sin City graphic novels.

In addition, Gates of Fire, a novel by Steven Pressman about the battle of Thermopylae, is rumored to have a movie version in the works as well.

Link to IMDB's info on the movie 300: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0416449/

Dont know if anyone here remembers it, but there was a film a while ago called 'The 300' or something like that. It was about Thermopylae, and was absolutely terrible. Granted it was really old, but it was just so bad. The only reason i watched it was because i had loved the Stephen Pressman :grin

Thanks for the info Bgreman. Ill have to look into this more

Hmm...Zack Snyder, director of Dawn of the Dead. Could be interesting, visually he is very appealing, but I can't imagine him making a drama.

But, I guess this is in the end a comic book adaptation, so you can't expect anything too grand.

And he's also gonna do "Rainbow Six" in the same year? Two high-profile projects, let's see if he can pull it off.

Yeah, I stumbled upon this a while ago, and got interested with it being a Miller comic and all, but once I came upon the director, I lost interest. I really hope this movie turns out good, because I don't see that much potential in the director.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Rainbow Six movie got pushed back. It's been rumored to be made since 1999, and its gone through many directors, including Quentin Tarantino at one point, IIRC.

I'll be interested to see who they cast as Leonidas, though.

Actually the story is told through the eyes of a helot slave, belonging to King Leonidas, and who survived the final battle at Thermopylae. (Gates of Fire). George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino are strongly rumoured to Produce/Direct/Star in this movie. Bruce Willis is also considered to be a strong starter for the movie......

Ancient era movies are getting more popular... Vin Diesel (or however you spell it) is working on a Hannibal... No, not the one that eats other humans.

Nope, in one battle (think it was Cannae actually...) he charged his elephants straight at the romans. But the Romans had learned their lesson and quickly formed gaps in the lines that allowed the elephants to run straight through the formations while the romans threw spears or whatever at the ellies as they passed by.

I imagine that 300 will be very inaccurate and heavily stylised, more a piece of art rather than epic story telling. Potentially highly entertaining, but nothing like what most people at this site would like to see.

If they are making a movie of pressfield's novel then that should be very different, more historically accurate, more 'epic' like gladiator. I hope they do start making movies of steven pressields books, because they have been excellent. My fav was 'Tides of War' - fantastic, completely different from gates of Fire, much better. It would be great of they made a movie based on tides of war. I don't think there has ever been a movie about the Peloponnesian war..... for shame.

it's not meant to be accurate. It's based off a comic book.

LOl. Even so, I think Leonidas should be played by someother, although Bruce Willis is getting old and good for the apart, they need someone with better charisma for the Leonidas. Bruce could be one of the main captains or a hero from past days that still serve in the spartan army.

Hell yeah. I was telling my friend earlier that Hollywood should remake a movie about the battle of Thermopylae. Why not, the story has everything that you need to make a great movie. I really hope that the movie shows the Spartans has they really were and how ferocious the battle was. This is truly a great age we RTW fans live in with them making all of these sword and saddles movies. Don't forget that "Kingdom of Heaven" is coming out on Friday.
