Medieval 2 started lagging out of nowhere

The game was running fine for 2 years straight and now all of a sudden horrible lag...campaign, battle. The cpu temperature and load are normal. And there were no driver updates or windows updates when it started lagging.

Have run disk cleanup and do a deep optimized defrag of your harddrive(s)?
