Display Driver issue Medieval 2

I've done some searching around and wasn't able to find anything but I apologize if this is a common bug. Essentially, about once every 15 seconds, whenever I go over almost any object that brings up a smaller text box, such as occupy populace or army details, the game stops responding and it has to reload, which takes 3-5 seconds. Not only that, but if it has to reload within a few seconds of just reloading, the game completely stops responding. On my desktop it mentions that display drivers have stopped working, but I've updated them and have had no issues on any other games, including other Total War titles. This is on Steam vanilla M2TW. I have an Intel i5 4670K processor with a GTX 760 graphics card, running Windows 8. I would appreciate any help, as this is one of my favorite games.
