Should less well-known religions like Raellianism be given media attention? Should we be covering what non-mainstream faiths are up to? Will the Raellians go on to become a world religion?

Opinions, questions and comments welcome. I am not a Raellian, but I play one on T.V.

Anyone who makes up his own religion has something seriously wrong with their head. I mean, you at least have to have a story of being visited by and angel or God, or finding some artifact, being given revalations, being a prophet, and so on. If you just announce, "Well guys, I was up late last night listening to Enigma, and made up my own religion; we're going to worship trees." your religion has serious issues from the outset.

As for Ghana, what do you expect from sub-saharan Africa. The continent is the least politically free and least economically developed.

No, not a jihad. What interests me about the Raellian "movement" or "faith" or what-have-you is that it is consistently positioned to the left of center from a religious basis, if you can call something essentially atheistic, religious. I'm not certain that a belief system that worships aliens qualifies as a religion just yet.

As for the idea that "anyone who makes up his own religion has something seriously wrong with his/her head", I think we have to consider the very real fact that we have no way of knowing that Moses, Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha, Krisna, and pretty much every other "holy" figure in history has not done exactly the same thing. What evidence do we have that Judaism is not the invention of one man? Or that Islam was not the whole creation of Mohammed, alone, without divine spiritual revelation?

We have to consider the possibility that Claude Vorhilon really did meet little aliens with goatees on the slopes of a volcano one day many years ago. How else could you explain a human being's decision to wear some sort of Jedi-Samurai get up and to always keep his hair in a queue?

I'm going to see if I can find the Dateline piece that was done on the Raellians a couple of years ago when the Clonaid stuff was in play. It's worth watching, if only for sheer entertainment value.

And vote, people! Will the teachings of Rael one day take over the world? What will that world look like?

No, we're not going to do a marketing campaign for every wacko out there, although my partners and I would certainly take the contracts. There may not be any facts in politics, but in religion, people generally know there are no facts. Marketing is waaaay easier when all you're handling is fantasy. It's much harder to get caught in a lie.

But who said that organized religion is dead? On our last trip to Alabama for a state legislative campaign, we saw churches actively protesting a candidate's right to hold office on the grounds that she was not sufficiently Christian. Whole congregations were turning up at state fairs and municipal homecomings with plastic fetuses covered in red paint and pro-Iraq War signs. That's organized religion in action.

And remember the 2004 election? "God, guns and gays!" Organized religion is alive and well. I remind you that Islam qualifies as an organized religion. And so does Raellianism, for that matter.

The point is, isn't it just possible that today's wacko fringe cult is tomorrow's new Catholic Church? And it doesn't have to be Raellianism. It could be any weird little movement.

Is this intended as a general representation of your anti-gay/anti-lesbian stance? Or do you want to give a large federal grant to Ghana in the hopes that the money can be put toward developing a civilized society within that nation?

In the first case, I don't think it reasonable to assume that an entire free society should accord with the will of a single individual. In the second case, I would totally support such a decision. We ought give back some of the money we have stolen over the years.

Aliens are the new god, by the way.
