Attacking another evil faction as an evil faction?
Hello, I've been playing my first campaign in Third Age Total War. I've been playing as the Orcs of the Misty Mountains on VH/VH. Note: This mod is excellent so far.
When the campaign began I decided to move East to face the Silvan Elves and let the Orcs of Gundabad fight Eriador. I fought a long war against the Silven's but eventually conquered their lands. The Anduin ran red with elf blood!! As time went on I also conquered most of Dale's lands and pushed the Dwarves on the Eastern side of the map into the corner.
Now here's where I've run into a problem. While I was up pushing back the Elves and Dwarves in the North, Mordor and Harad flooded Gondor and took almost everything on the bottom half of the map. Mordor and Isengard both destroyed all of Rohan to where Rohan has only one settlement left (Fangorn). The only Free People factions that still have a decent amount of land are Eriador and the High Elves. While I'm happy that my allies were doing well, I need 45 settlements to win and currently only have 30. I think I'm going to have to attack Rhun or Isengard and get some more settlements.
So my question is, what will happen if I attack another evil faction that is under Sauron's protection? Will I be taken out of his protection and be a target for invasions? Thanks!

He will get pissed at you and possible call an invasion on you. I say do it

Personally, I prefer to bait them and force them into attacking you. Especially if you think you want to take on Mordor, you'll want the other evil factions backing you up instead of having them side with your newfound enemies.

You will tick off Sauron, which will lead to unrest from excommunication and possibly invasions.
However, Evil settlements have the same culture as you and tend to be on mountain terrain (highest recruit rate, Troll-capable), which leads to a very rapid and valuable conquest

It will work just like in M2TW with the Pope and Christian kingdoms. He'll warn you to stop, your "favor" with him will drop (unless the evil faction you're attacking has lost his protection previously), and if you don't you'll lose protection and be the target of Invasions.
Its hard to bait other evil factions into attacking you. I would suggest building an attack force to take on the monster Mordor. Mordor almost always loses Sauron's protection ironically, so play the waiting game, capture ALL remaining rebel/good settlements, even if their not adjacent - just make sure you have military access. You want other factions with you to take on Mordor, they'll obliterate other Evil factions easily one on one, save for Rhun.
Taking Mordor is your best shot. You'll have to wait until Isengard and Mordor go to war, but that gives you time to manage your armies and settlements. Don't bother recruiting archers if you're playing MOS, which I assume you're not. A handful of Troll units and the Balrog (if you have him) in a full stack will guarantee victory if used correctly.
If you don't want to wait, I suggest sending armies over to the West to help your Northern brethren in their war against Eriador and the High Elves. Take out the Dwarves of the Blue Mountains and finish off the faction for good
Or if an evil faction loses its protection while you finish off your nearby enemies, attack them. Like I said, usually Mordor loses it, but if your lucky Isengard would be easy pickings
