Can't play MII:TW on steam

Hey there, I bought the steam version of Medieval 2 + kingdoms and can't seem to be able to play it

I have tried both the custom launcher posted on steam forums, disabling UAC and a plethora of other things

I get the alternative launcher to open correctly but when I choose to start the game all I get is a steam error "Failed to start game (App is already running)" and yes I checked the task manager and there's no process there running.

I am using windows 8.1 btw, everything is updated to the last version (game, drivers, directx, etc etc)

I have had this problem couple of times with other games. I didn't find any working solution to the problem in the internet, although for other people it works. So I ended up backuping all the games I had installed, uninstalled steam, and after that went to steam folder and deleted everything that remains there, and then installed it back. Moved the backups back to the right folder and the problem was gone. If anything doesn't seem to solve it then this does.

Logged in as Administrator?
Taken ownership/control of C: drive?

I fixed it after all, thanks for trying to help. But it was really gruesome to fix


Had to redownload the loader, reset all the folder permissions, remove Admin permissions and compatibility from the launcher and set the folder permissions again...

I had everything like that at first but for some reason it wasnt working, had to redo everything again.
