What unit size are you using?

Did you try playing on high/med settings? Some games have this optimization issue where they sometimes run better on higher settings.

Make sure that your anti-virus is either disabled when playing, or set to ignore the RS2\RTW directory. Some anti-virus software will cause the game to drag a lot...Semantic(Norton) anti-virus is terrible for this.

Are all settings truly on low? Make sure to save before exiting the preferences exe and watch for any options that involve vegetation/trees, or shadows as they take a toll on your system. Im also assuming that no other background apps are running, this includes any downloads.

And what do you mean by "crazy lag"? Are you playing giant army battles or using fast-foward? Fast-foward tends to make my system lag.

How much RAM does your PC have? It could be that you have too little. AVG is pretty good when it comes to RTW, but I would suggest going into options and having it ignore files in RTW folders. The active scanner in these AV programs often causes RTW to lag because RTW doesn't like what the AV program is doing. It can even cause CTD's.

Hmm...well, try setting this in preferences.txt:

    USE_TRIPLE_BUFFER:TRUE

Normally it is set to FALSE.

    Triple buffering - ON.
Provides speed improvement and reduces lag.
