Default A game that will use Dual Core technology

We were discussing how useful Dual core chips would be for upcoming games a few weeks ago. The below link is to a YouTube video with devs explaining how their game uses a multiple core chip to increase the loading speed of their graphics.

Hahahahaha! :tooth: I just noticed this game on gamespot a few minutes ago. It just looks excellent, singlecore impossible? I bet! I have to scrape some money together to get a Dual-Core, luckily this game is far away. Any more games that use the Dual-core technology?

Yes, and you know what? Alan Wake is developed by the Finnish Remedy Entertainment!!!

And MS will publish it... (Not really that great). But it will be Vista and X360 only.

I know... But if youd make a game that uses a quad set up youd probably sell atmost a couple of hundred. He states that SINGLE-core cant run it. Adding things up = its made for dual-core technology.

Yeah, I should have said "how the game uses multiple cores", but that doesn't matter. The point is that this is a preview of how the next-gen games will use multiple core chips for gaming.

I'm suprised that Intel is releasing the quad core chips so soon. I hope they will lower the price of Core 2 duo chips so I can buy a cheap 6600 chip when Vista comes out. Otherwise, I'll get a 6400 and overclock it.

I cant imagine DX10 only games selling too well, especially when you take the fact that DX10 requires Vista(£180) and a DX10 card(probably £150+) into account, lots of us have just bought extremely expensive XT's, XTX's, GTX's etc so dont want to really upgrade in like January. At least the publishers were smart enough to make a 360 game Vista only!

I don't like the idea of Dual core CPU only games, never mind DX10 only!
My £80 single core Opty is now running at 2.9Ghz nice and stable @42degrees, I was hope my investment would see me in the clear for awhile yet, but how long have we got, 2 yrs maybe?
Afterall most PC gamers have only moderate or lower systems, just look at the thread for system requirements for MTW 2!

How many games currently effectively(ie;it works) support Dual Core? And is it true that a Dual Core CPU running a non/inaffectively supported game will only be running on one of it's 2 cores and thus be a bit doggy(slow, except the Conroes which are just plain fast) and hence be somewhat dissapointing to said owner?

Well, the question of how long we have before we need to switch to Vista is an interesting one. PC Gamer UK recons that it will be at least another year after Vista (£180 btw) is released before publishers start making DX10 only games (ignore Halo2, its a promotional game), and they will still be DX9 compatable. Then in about 2008 I suspect that there will be an on going battle between DX9 gamers and DX10 gamers, which ever side is largest will win over the publishers as the pubs will make more moeny by catering to thier needs instead of the minority. But then in 2009 games will be too damned beutiful for DX9, so we will have to upgrade, but its ok, by then out current equipment will be too slow for games, so we will have to upgrade. But if you want to play todays games forever then you dont have to upgrade to DX10 at all!

Well from what I heard, Dual cores dont make games that dont support it run any faster as they only use one core. Some games (like RTW) actually run slower on Dual Cores if you havent configured it correctly, but I suspect this Christmas's release schedule to have dual core support and infact run faster with Dual core as well.

But programs are split into threads. A dual core could run a game and anthoer application at the same time with no performance loss, this is handy for me when my PC does random virus scans, my slow 2800+ @2.1GHz (OCed, originally 1.8GHz) cant handle any game plus virus scan. Dual Cores will also benefit those who do lots of multimedia work.

If you guys remember the past discussions, we talked about how the new games would have to be programmed from the start to use separate cores to do separate things. The video is a perfect example of that because they used a core to load the backgrounds & physics on a separate core from the rest of the game running on another core.

Of course a game that isn't optimised for multi-threading multiple cores isn't going to be any faster on a dual core. I don't know where there is a list of games that are comparitive to Alan Wake, but I think we may see a few Vista games next year that will make you want to move to a Dual core.
