Default Can I pull it off?

After taking 2 rebel settlments and 1 seleucid city, I had the urge to go after Carthage. I was a bit cocky and tryed to take on Carthage while already engaged with the Seleucids.
So while i'm off campaigning in the north east, I built up a 2nd stack consisting of axemen and alot of archers. 3 turns later I officially declare war on carthage by attacking a relatively small stack they had at there border.

Battle pretty much played out like this-

    Egypt- 7 Axemen - 4 archer (11 Units total)
    vs
Carthage- 4 Iberian Infantry - 2 elephant (6 units total)

I figured I could take down the elephants relatively quickly with my archers. So I start the battle and set my archers to use fire arrows. They start raining down arrows on the elephants, and so far it's actually working. 5-6 volly's and 2 minutes later i've taken down 1 unit of there elephants. They finally get a hint and there remaining elephants charge my archers. My archers had height thus making there range of fire larger than normal. As the elephants charged I take down 3 of them and they rout.

    Battle count is now-
    Egypt- 7 Axemen - 4 archer
    vs
    Carthage- 4 Iberian Infantry

I pretty much pelted the remaining carthage troops with arrows until my archers completely ran out of ammo. I choose this conservative play style because this was the only stack I was going to be able to use to campaign in the west. The rest of my troop production was going towards the campaign vs the seleucids. So I didn't want to risk sending my axemen into a hand to hand battle unless it was completely neccasary. I needed to keep them in tact. Eventually my archers take a toll on the remaining carthage troops and they rout. My archers cut them down as they rout. I was really surprised to see that the Iberian Inf just sat there and took the arrows. They never once apporached. maybe it was a AI mistake.

    Final battle stats-
    Egypt- 7 axemen- 4 archer
    Carthage- 1 Iberian Infantry

So questions is, can I pull it off? 7 axemen and 4 archer units. can I take on the entire Carthage empire? or at least damage them to the point where there unable to launch a counterattack, if I fail?

    Stay tuned to find out...

They have around 5 settlments in total. I really dont know the settlment names very well though.

Scipii already captured the settlment west of Syracuse and Julii captured a 2nd carthage settlment on some island just to the south of segesta. carthage has around 5 settlments left to my knowledge.

They have 2 settlments to the north east of Numidia and 2-3 more just south of the Gauls. I know spain is currently campaigning against carthage since there practically neighbors.

I plan on takeing the 2 settlments to the north east of Numidia, and i'll go from there.

I have 11 units total to take 2 minor citys. Shouldnt be to difficult. If I do capture the 2 settlments, I can just produce units from there, if I need them.

Once you take the two minor cities and start producing from there, you should be well off. Just don't take it too far; if you lose a battle, give yourself time to regroup. Just don't let Carthage have time to take any more areas.

Heh, I used less than that number of units and a very many spies to raze almost every city in Carthage. Carthage early on are pushovers once their initial elephants are gone. My strategy against Carthage is one of two things. First, take Carthage city very early, and hold onto it at all costs. Without it, Carthage will be crippled. Once you have spare forces (don't ignore the Greeks and Gauls!), then take the rest of Carthage and Numidia.

Alternatively, use some spies to locate Carthage's armies and recon cities, then go by sea and raze every Carthaginian city that is lightly defended (infiltrate with spies to try and open gates). Once you take the city, exterminate it, destroy all the buildings, and build whatever Roman shrines and temples you can (to cause Carthage cultural penalties). Actually this is alot more satisfying, and crippling, and it will fill your coffers. You can use a small army for this, just make sure, if you can't get back to your ships at turn's end, end your turn on a river (there is only one place in Carthage really where this can happen, and there si a river nearby). Play it smart, don't engage in a pitched battle, and you'll be fine.

Also my advice, get a general to your army ASAP! A general-less army is at a severe disadvantage (and you will NEED some cavalry to chase down fleeing enemies, or they will come back to haunt you later). Finally, recruit all the Mercs you can, your pillaging will pay for them.
Count no man happy until he is dead.

You need to attack the small stacks and lightly defended cities.
If you take a city replenish your forces.

I'd pick off all of their weaker settlements and the nuse those settlements to retrain and raise more troops. Then slowly pick off all of Carthage's smaller armies.
