I'd say he was just a useful idiot, and he had little say of what was going on, since he had very little authority. The true culprits were behind both Yeltsin and Gorbachev, it was Soviet nomenclature that decided to trade its country's influence and wealth for political power. Most of "free and democratic" governments of ex-USSR were members of that nomenklatura. Doesn't make Gorbachev less guilty, of course. I'd rather see people like Chubajs and Abramovich die. U.S.S.R was the most evil of empires to ever have crossed the face of the earth. The millions who died in gulag camps and state executions certainly would if had the chance, seen the dissolving of the U.S.S.R as the greatest achievement of the 20th century.

It may have been a blunder, and he may've failed as a leader. All valid arguments there from you, but I feel it was for the best.
