Default 300 lashes, years in prison and travel ban for calling for democracy

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...di-Arabia.html

ROUGH JUSTICE: FLOGGING AND SAUDI ARABIA

Under Saudi's Sharia or Islamic law, flogging is mandatory for a number of moral offences such as adultery or being alone in the company of an unrelated person of the opposite sex.

But it can also be used at the discretion of judges as an alternative or in addition to other punishments.

King Abdullah (pictured) has promoted some social reforms since taking the throne in 2005 but diplomats say he is held back by religious clerics and princes.

Cinemas and music concerts are banned, while many restaurants and even some shopping centres cater to families only, especially on holidays.

Religious police roam streets to make sure no unrelated men and women mix.

The Saudi court system is exclusively controlled Wahahbi/Salafi clerics, and bans the employment of non-Salafi citizens, especially as judges.

Saudi Arabia is the world's leading country in the use of torture-by-flogging, public beheadings and publically crucifying condemned prisoners.

A Saudi judge has sentenced a political activist to 300 lashes and four years in prison for calling for a constitutional monarchy in Saudi Arabia, his rights group said on Sunday.
Omar al-Saeed is the fourth member of the Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association (ACPRA) to be jailed this year after the group issued statements attacking the ruling family over its human rights record and calling for democracy.
Saeed, who has also been issued with a worldwide travel ban for his so-called transgressions, did not have legal representation at the secret hearing when he was sentenced, ACPRA said in a statement on its website.

Why are we allys with these Princes. The West are hypocrites.
The ruling family has too much power and are corrupt. We should put pressure on them worldwide for killing gays and other human rights disgraces
We see Bahrain ad Yemen suffering from these guys too why are we not helping these people who want democracy and get whipped and locked up if they dare ask for it.Are we in the West not pro democracy.Or is it only the country's we do not like that we get involved in.Democracy for all or none.

Saudi Arabia really needs to be more modern. The princes can drive super cars and build palaces but the people need better human rights.

I'd say it was more the Russian occupation in the first place that caused Afghanistan's problems than the Afghans fighting against it...requires a bit of logical thinking but there it is.

They kill gays and treat women like cattle too.

Maybe with America making its own oil now and Canada producing stuff now we can get away from Saudi Arabia.

We barely import any from Saudi Arabia, but we still support them.

Well there is a reason for this.

The status quo is always preferred to an unknown. Saudi Arabia right now has a official stance where they are supposed to be "jailing" extremists and terrorists. A new government may not have that stance.

I assume you are talking about the anti-russian campaign int he early 80s.

You are from the UK.... lets see....

Africa, post-ww1 Iraq, Jordan, post ww2-Egypt, Palestine. Yup the UK sure knows what it's doing, I mean the whole overthrowing a democratic government (Zimbabwe-Rhodesia) for Mugabe in Zimbabwe was an EXCELLENT idea.

If you are talking about today at least the US didn't just give instant "democracy" and then (literally) immediately abandon the country in question like the UK always does. No doubt you would of done that in Germany as well if it wasn't for the US. I mean you already did that once before and effectively created Hitler.

If you are talking about the early 80s I think Communism would of been a huge benefit to that country. You have to start centralized civilization before being a democracy and I think enforced state-atheism would of been of great benefit. They should of invaded DECADES earlier though.

Policy always trumps morals but I would say the US at least is stepping aside under Obama with fracking (and even wind and solar use) driving energy independance the Saudis would really like more buy in on Syria and we seem to holding that at arms length

They retain leverage no doubt but less everyday as Brazil and various African countries expand production and export capacity, even less if the US comes to some arrangement with Iraq

Saudis don't like Iran, Muricah doesn't like Iran, so Muricah likes Saudi.

    Then come the Jews.

A number of Saudis were involved in 9/11 . Yet for some reason we invaded Iraq. Go figure.
