Default stability with Rome Total War Gold Edition

    what gives....

after cracking my original cd version i bought the gold edition and since then no matter what mod i put on the game it crashes. its on a newly installed computer, up to date, virgin install of rome.

i have rome gold edition (dvd), rtrpe6, rtrpe7beta, the roman realism mod and skin pack installed in that order.

the first crash was when i tried to take (playing as romans) the city on the heal of italy. it asked me what i wanted to do, i chose occupy, it crashed. I fought the battle again, i chose enslave, it crashed. I tried the next day it worked.

i am now in the year 251 summer bc holding the thin strip of land at the bottom of greece (before conrith i think - which i have just taken from macedon). when i click on end turn it gets to thrace and crashes. i put on '-show_err -nm' on the shortcut, it crashes, tells me nothing.

this is all after a fart around the forrums and internet trying to find a mod that will actually play on the gold edition.

i must add that i have altered macedons troop prices for hypasti and their phalanx (pink one) to cut down on their rampage which is a bit crap. i also played macedon (first, before roman) when i installed the game but that repeatedly crashed when i tried to take the city which egypt has at the start of the game in greece\thrace

if i'm doing something wrong tell me, otherwise, what would be the best way trying to get round this repeating crash.

i just tried it again and my faction leader died - leaving a city with red faces - maybe the revolt bug - but does this do it every time a city revolts?

no..... sorry... after my leader died the year jumped to 6000bc (wtf) so now i have a corrupted game, even trying to load the game in romesage to change the date forward does nothing - loads on the starting screen as 251bc shows up as 6**** bc.

What language version is it? Is it the english version? Oh, and do you have the version on a single DVD or the one on separate disks?

I think you meant: RTRPE v1.6 full install, RTRPE v1.7 patch, Candelarius` Extended Realism Mod and the promethean skin pack, right?

This is actually a vanilla bug AFAIK. It happens in different mods, not just Platinum and I don`t think it`s fixable, but the good news is that it`s pretty random and you can play again and not have it as you did. Yes, I know it`s a mood braker.

It may be the revold bug. Not sure. Try to see if any of your cities are about to rebel and try to stop them from doing that. Also, try to use the toggle_fow command so you can see where/when exactly does the CTD occur.

I have the RTW Gold Edition (the one on a single DVD) and I can play with it.

i must add that i have altered macedons troop prices for hypasti and their phalanx (pink one) to cut down on their rampage which is a bit crap. i also played macedon (first, before roman) when i installed the game but that repeatedly crashed when i tried to take the city which egypt has at the start of the game in greece\thrace

Changing the prices should be no problem, unless you accidentaly changed something else that should not be like that.

Don`t use RomeSage. It causes problems with RTW v1.5 and BI v1.6. It messes the year date and some have also reported more serious things. It is clearly compatible with RTW v1.2 on which RTR 6 Gold is based, but it messes things with RTW v1.5 on which RTRPE is based.

you can just smell the frustration cant you...

the rtw gold edition is on a single dvd, says both rtw and bi are version 1.0.0.0 but i think they are the very latest - 1.6. the language version in english, maybe a special version for uk.

"RTRPE v1.6 full install, RTRPE v1.7 patch, Candelarius` Extended Realism Mod and the promethean skin pack, right?" - yes

the rome sage thing, i guess with rtwpe doesn't work as my year changed to something like 69995bc!!

the thing is, i'm used to patching games, maybe altering them a little and used to them working. the unit.txt file altered only changed the unit costs of a few troops. my experience with rtwpe thus far hasn't been promising. i can't play the vanilla games any more as i've been spoilt by all the great mods - thay make the vanilla games unplayable and cheesy to me. i'd rather not bother.

since the saved game/s have changed to a strange date and are still crashing at the end of a turn, are they fixable. i didn't get any feedback putting the switches on the shortcut.

i enabled FOW and it crashed on the end of a movement of armenian troops up the left hand side of the caspian sea. since i don't have any error reports i don't know what the next move was.

damn it was just getting good!

That`s not possible. THe DVD vesion should have RTW v1.5 and BI v1.6. Where exactly did you looked? Did you looked in the Options menu after starting the game?
Oh, and you know that you need a vanilla version of RTW before installing any new mod(RTRPE in this case), right? That means no other mods or patches (for your version) installed previously and no modifications made before installing the mod(RTRPE)

It has to do with the engine of RTW v1.5. IIRC I tried it with the same results on a vanilla game some time ago.

    What switches would that be?
You should still have the old save game in the save folder inside your RTW folder. Unless you used RomeSage on an autosave. AFAIK RomeSage does not replace your save, but creates another one.

Did you checked to see if there are any cities about to revolt?

I was looking at the 'file version' in properties (1.0.0.0) of the exe rather than the 'product version' which shows as 1.5.0.0. my fault. duh. i'm used to setting up total war for mods. this time i installed in this order:

    1. rtw gold edition dvd (rtw 1.5, bi 1.6)
    2. RTR_Platinum_v1.6_Full_Install.zip
    3. RTR_PE V1.7beta.rar
    4. Extended Realism Mod - Standard Edition
    5. Extended Realism Mod - Promethean Legion Pack

    What switches would that be?

the switches: - show_err. i've since re-setup another rtrpe to see if i installed it wrong (same setup as above). i didn't save the saved games.

Did you checked to see if there are any cities about to revolt?
how would i do that since when i turned on fow i didn't see the green/yellow/red faces icons on an other city except my own faction. i just saw the ai's moves. also, if say a town in parthia was about to revolt how could i stop it happening if i am nowhere near it or have no diplomats near them?

even though i didn't keep the saved game i am still interested in how to get round these type of errors as when i played rtr gold with my old 3cd set of rtw i was always getting crashes, not as frequent as late but anoying all the same.

these are not hard patches to install or understand how to use, i used to use loads of patches with a game called red baron II among others - that was complicated!

Well, from what I see you seem to have installed everything correctly. Regarding the revolting city. I see no other way then to use a cheat. Not sure which one or if it will work because I don`t use them. Hope is that the revolt bug will be fixed by the changes Marcus is working on. I don`t know when the full version will be released though. Other then that I`m sorry, but I don`t know why you`re getting so many crashes with different mods. Sorry I couldn`t be of real help to you!
