    Default Chambers of the Hand

The Chamber of the Hand of the King

Here are the personal quarters of Meldred 'the Kingmaker' Baratheon, Hand of the King and absentee Lord Paramount of the Stormlands.

A nervous secretary arrives. He sends word from the chancellor. He needs Lord Baratheon inmediately, or Aerys will be butchered without a Royal Writ.

My Lord Hand, we are marching to Harrenhall, determined to seize it. I would apreciate if your son joins us in there with his host. Also, reinforce the capital's defences, as Aerys troops have been removed, and we needed them. I want a sizable host protecting the city. I trust in you, my Lord Hand. Send me reports of the war in the Realm whenever you can.

Lord Baratheon taps his quill lately, thinking quietly upon the battle of words yesterday. The Queen held the Queensguard, the Kingsguard and the Goldcloaks within her hands. Thankfully, one would easily be written off shortly thanks to his talk with the King prior to his departure. His sole tool in positioning himself higher was the fact that the King agreed to the reformations and revitalization of the Small Council, something the Queen was unaware of. This would counter her presence and ensure that the Council was led by the Lord Hand or the King alone. And that only the Kingsguard would be the security, nobody else. He could easily draw up the Host from the Bronzegate to reinforce King's Landing, but that would leave the Stormlands defenseless with an additional 20,000 being levied and readied to depart. Meldred leaned back in his chair, sighing lightly. If only Aurelia had remained as stupid as a baby, then he wouldn't have to deal with this.

    To my Lord Hand:

Good. I hereby forbid to execute him, as he is of my kin. You shall speak with Aerys and try to make him recant from his sins, he is my brother, after all. Treat Matarys gently, no harm shall fall upon him.

I advice you, Lord Hand, to not attack the Queen directly, be subtle, I don't want another cold war between both my Hand and the Queen. She has the authority I granted her, as I granted yours. Both of you shall work as a team, prove her what are you able for, my Lord Hand, if she refuses tell her it's my order, to both colaborate, for the Realm's sake.

No, your troops should reinforce me only, my own host. But leave the troops at Bronzegate, to protect the Stormlands. And tell your son to be extremely watchful over the capital, ready to reinforce, or break a siege, as soon as posible. He should have scouts and informants around the capital, for if danger arrives to my Royal Seat.

However we have a great problem to solve: the North. I'm not able to solve it properly from the camp, my mind is troubled enough with plans, tactics and the strategy, I cannot solve this alone. Read the last Manderly's message and those of Lord Edwyle. In case of doubt, you shall support Lord Stark, whatever the outcome, that is what I own to his father, my friend.

    To my Lord Hand:

I send with this a Royal Writ authorising you to carry out the reforms, and re-asserting your authority to rule in my absence, however, remember these, colaborate with the Queen, I don't want rifts between both. Good, he shall be carefully watched, send ravens to Greyjoy and his major vassals. When I take Harrenhall (ooc: I'm at Harrenhall, trying to seize it), your son may join me. And indeed, a detachment, shall travel Northwards, send my Kingsguard Rosby (NPC, but you may rp him if you wish) as a Royal Representative and to assert the Crown's authority there.

Do whatever is fitting with the Northern Lords, comunications in the field will be difficult, your ravens may not reach my host when on move. I will send ravens reporting where I've erected a camp, so you shall send me your own reports, about the Realm's affairs.

Rule well in my absence, for the Realm's sake.

The Lord Commander of the Goldcloaks appeared at the door.

[ooc: Assuming you wouldn't send me away....]

"Lord Hand," said Raymar bluntly, "I have recently given instruction to expand the City Watch to ten thousand men. We cannot risk another repeat of Aerys' near-seizure of the Red Keep. The Palace Guard will number three thousand and the City Guard will number seven. Each Gate will receive an extra company and I request permission to construct a third barracks at Fishmonger Square, in the vicinity of the Mud Gate, and establish a regular presence in the city docks. With the great instability in the Realm right now, I feel an armed presence on the docks will deter any would-be spies, informants or smugglers in the pay of Riverlords or Valesmen."

    He awaited the Hand's response.

Lord Baratheon looks up at Raymar, listening to his words. Quietly, the Lord Hand turns, pulling out a map of the city, refreshing his memory of Mud Gate. He examines the map before looking at the Lord Commander.

It is an ideal location. Mud Gate sits upon the water's edge and is the most viable place for an assault force to approach from if they chose to come by sea. I believe we should increase the City Watch's presence in the Northern parts of Capital...temporarily that is.

He then rolls up the map, looking at the Lord Commander.

"I did." said Raymar, "I know best the capabilities of the Watch and I know we are unable to defend the city against something like Aerys' plot again. More men are a necessity, and I have the budget to fund them."

    Raymar produced a parchment,
"With the new manpower each gate will receive a second Company, enlarging our presence in the entire Capital periphery, including the north. Additionally this new barracks will house 5 companies, tasked with improving security in the southern city area and, importantly, the docklands."

Just remember, Lord Commander, I have stationed over 9,000 Stormlander troops at Bronzegate. They will be replaced soon by professional troops, but nonetheless, the capital has nearby reinforcements.

He takes the parchment and examines it quietly.

I will approve of it. I will make this an emergency case since we are at war. Once the war is ended, it will be up to the King on whether to decrease it back to 5,000 or keep the 10,000 in the city.

"Once the war is over," said Raymar, "We must build a peace. Until we have not only peace, but stability, a strong City Watch can only be of benefit to the King and the Capital's security. I will have men on the streets in overwhelming presence, I will have more men than ever vigilant against spies, seditious behaviour and profiteers hoping to make coin out of the chaos, and I will have the Red Keep itself watertight. Assassins won't even be willing to try."

    Lord Hand nods slowly.

We will have to wait and see what happens at the end of the war.

It is time I returned home. I plan on catching a ship that my father is sending. My only goal here was to become a Kingsguard and I have been beaten to that by a Hedge Knight, also, I cannot bear to watch the Queen tighten her grip on power.

Thank you Lord Hand, I hope that the Seven give you their blessings in all your future endeavors. With that he leaves, presumably to find the Commander of the Goldcloaks again.

    A letter from the Vale.

    To Lord Baratheon,

The conditions that I told you of in the last letter we exchanged, are still valid. Exile Aurelia Lannister and her spawn.

    "My dear Lord:

These are the most unfortunate news lately, they seem to have left the fight, and run back to their keeps, which show that their objetive was to rule over these lands, unopossed, and then when I decided to parlay with Tully and solve this troublesome situation peacefully their were somehow offended. I will solve Aurelia's affair as soon I can, however I must now pacify the Riverlands, which is of the greatest importance.
However I count with your troops to protect the capital. I'm safe enough behind the walls of Harren the Black.

You will receive my answer about Aegon soon.

In the Light of the Seven.

    Sincerely,

    BAELOR"
