    Default Expanding as Rome

Im playing as Rome and I keep getting bogged down whenever i look to expand. My stacks gradually get worn down by fighting and I have to retreat losing territory. Where do you think the best place to invade is once the italian penisula is secure? I tried macedonia and Greece but keep being repelled back.

Now germania is attacking from the north so Im hemmed in.Should I look to invade north Africa and take carthage?

Carthage is a key city.... so yeah, you should go for it. Defend in the northern Penninsula and try to take Patavium... Great city for Pumpin out troops. And good economy. Keep going at Greece and Macedon, you do not want them to get strong. = )

what i did was first take the whole of italy back, moved into sicilia and slowly built my forces around there to move to carthage and have a good amount of men for the assault. i also took Mediolanum and Patavium and i am now again slowly building forces to move through gaul. in my campaign i need alot of defence for northern and southern italy from both Greece and Macedon always on the assualt. i took apollonia and Tarentum then moved into lower greece and am under heavy sieges every turn so i can no longer move there.
Dacia is a superpower in this and are threatening challenge.
basically i waited for the enemy to go into war with other army and moved across whilest they were weak so i have a start in greece and carthage. thats my Darthmod is so great because the enemy soon recover and you really have to think about what to do next. look for weak spots and take them there then prepare for the defence. its all that you cn do if you let the enemy expand and build for the better challenge.
and like P-MAN said dont let greece or macedon expand tho because they really are pushing my forces with at leat 2 of my cities under siege by them both every turn. reminds me of SPQR but this is challenging.

Romans maybe the most difficult faction to play in DarthMod....but if you have the patience and endurance to last until Marius reforms..which happen late in DarthMod due to difficulty, you start to feel the power!

i dont want the reforms to come yet im loving this campaign atm and the challenge is immense. ive never been under siege at every single border i have and i think my enemies are
Gaul, Greece, Carthage, Macedon, Dacia, Thrace, Germania, Spain, Numidia and Rebels. i usualy like to keep enemy numbers down to a minimum but on this mod they all seem to want me gone.
i dont want to lose the triarii aswell they look awesome. keep struggling on see what happens.

im playing on H/H on this current save and it is a good challenge if you allow the enemy to grow in force at the start instead of piling through and defeating them straight away.

I am play Red Roman right now, in V/H level, EU270bc. I will have to say, the AI is really good, I try to take over the two closed Gual cities and it toke me over 20 years, the gual just out number than me and they just keep coming from other far cities. I remember after I take over one of the two cities close to Red Roman, I try to send a sub-legion(1800) for a sudden strick on the last city where my two main legions facing with three Gaul legions who is guarding it but they are all crush by a reinforcement Gaul legion which is over 3000 people, I got only a hundreds make it back, it really cost me extra 5 years(10 turns) to finally take over the last city. I like this DM mod, thanks!!! I hate Gaul!!!

do u guys thinks Rome is stronger to defeat united or when divided into 3 families?
the reason i ask is that, i used to think united rome was harder to defeat cuz bigger, but after playing a couple of campaigns i think that, if they r 3 family members, Rome is protected by the SPQR army, so it wont be lost easily and the rest of italy has 3 different families each concentrating on one side of the fight.

so which ever way u want to enter italy, u hav to fight ur way thru. but in a united rome, it seems that if Rome is busy for example fighting the gauls in the north, then they hardly have any units in the south, so if u attack from there, u can easily conquer all the cities in the south before any force is there to oppose u.

    wat do u think?

Is VH battle difficulty a good challenge or is it stupidly hard because of the +7 morale the AI gets?

Darth, in your opinion, what is the hardest way to play darthmod as the Romans? Imperial campaign as one of the roman families, or the provincial campaign as unified rome?

i think VH would be rediculous to be honest. H/H on provincial if you give the AI abit of time to expand. at first its easy to expand a few cities out then the enemies seem to pile lots of armys at you constantly especially barbarians and greece. carthage seem to slowly build up their forces after you take carthage but then send a huge amount of armies to take the lands back and does get difficult if you leave them a while.
i have let the AI expand and grow financially in many mods but this is definitely the best for it as the AI do actually grow hugely and give you major hastle. just dont storm it at the start then the challenge will come in time. ill post some screens soon to show you what i mean.

The best gameplay for me would be to play H/H and huge settings (for epic battles and crucial population losses)

    In VH/VH ...it is impossible.
