I had a debate fairly recently with a English conservative about him. I confronted him with the fact that Thatcher and Reagan had both considered him to be a terrorist and he stuppornly defended those redicilous views.

He certainly is an iccon of the past century and will be remebered as such. The only thing I did not like about him was the amnesty given to all criminals of the appartheit regime under his administration.

And when looking at his political legacy: The ANC has deteriorated into a bunch of corrupt bureaucrats.

I think that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was what kept South Africa from descending into chaos and violence and allowed for a peaceful transistion to democracy.
And actually out of over 7000 cases it only granted amnesty in 849.

To me he's a symbol of the Naive ideologist hippie mentality we all had during the late 80's and 90's.

I remember his release, it was live on tv, and it was huge deal everywhere in the world, I was a 10 year old kid when we where watching with the entire family. Then 3 years later I read about ANC atrocities, and death squads and his wife giving kill orders, then you see South Africa go down the drain, becoming the murder capital of the world, and seeing new versions of apartheid (based on socio economics) etc...

It's all gone downhill since his release and the worlds love for SA and the worldwide feeling that some great battle had been won against evil.

our 90's mentality paved the way for the demagoguery of today due to idealists taking idealism and pc and brotherly love to the extreme.

I know it's bad of me, but to me, Mandela will always symbolize the flaws of that decade's "Zeitgeist" and the cynical angry reaction it provokes in our decade

Im not the one who post stuff about wich groups one is member of to make a point, that doesnt even makes sense.

Would it makes sense to you to debate with someone about, lets say, Islam and waste a lot of time, just to find out afterwards hes part of a group that calls itself "Allah rulez" and "I hate Jews" ? It makes total sense to point out what kind of ideology people associate with before i would start to waste my time on them. In another Thread i pointed that out and the moderation deleted my post. It is a diffrence if people immigrate peacefully or if they conquer Land, but this is not how the world is. Also, i wasn't pointing out some form of legal immigration with waiting periodes, because the left has this "No border, no nation, stop deportation" Ideology. And what does it do to brandmark the descendants of the conquerers? The germanic tribes conquered the celtic tribes, the anglo saxons conquered the british tribes, european settlers conquered north america and so on. Would oust the Land of american farmers and handing it over to some indian tribes change anything? And even if they would hand it over, where do we stop here? This tribe conquered the land from another tribe and it would end with a redistribution back to clovis men.

I don't think he deserves as much credit as he does for being peaceful. He did plenty to help blacks get their rights when he was fighting and then rotted in jail for however long.
I don't think Raegen and Thatcher weren't unjustified in calling him a terrorist though. He was a hostile militant using violent means to try and have his way for a long time. They also couldn't publicly condemn the South African regime for various political reasons.
