I have seen alot of paintings of Hazarat Isa(PBUH[Jesus]) and was wondering if you guys think that Hazarat Isa(PBUH) actually looked like he did in the paintings?

LoL. Are you trying to get on the Christians nerves by calling him "Hazrat Isa (PBUH)"?

Why not call him by his real name that the living people of that time used: "Yeshua".

Geez, havent you watched Passion of the Christ? I think its obvious he looked like Jim Caveazel (sp?).

Well, as a Russian Orthodox Christian, I grew up with the image of a Greco/Latin looking Jesus. You know, the kind you see on a stained glass window in a church...

I do, though, think he had a Semetic/Middle Eastern look... mainstream Israelites back then were not as Caucasian as they are now, and I doubt Greek and Roman assimilation did enough to make them look 'Anglo' like most Christians are used to seeing in paintings.

I've always imagined Jesus as a big nosed Jew, beard and long hair and all.
Passion of the Christ is good, albeit a bit bloody. Which is good IMO. In the Bible the descriptions are so clinical. The movie lets you see the gory details while consuming vast quantities of softdrinks and popcorns.

It was excellent as far as quality is concerned. And, as the movie showed, Jesus' real name was "Yeshua" which is the Aramaic equivalent of the Arabic "Issa".

But really by using words like "Hazarat Issa" you are essentially declaring ownership of Jesus as a Muslim. This can be quite offensive to many Christians.

Just imagine if some new Hippie religion arose and believed that Muhammad was part of a long line of "hippies" of old. And everytime they mentioned him they went "The Great Arabian Sage and Hippie Muhammad the Prophet of Groovieness". How would you feel? You'd feel they're stealing a central character of your faith and relegating him to hippie status.

Well, if any Christian feels offended, they may PM me or report me, I don't mind, and besides, Christians refer to him as Jesus Christ, as Muslims refer to him as Hazarat Isa.

    So:

    Hazarat Isa=Jesus Christ.

H&G, why was the Passion a bad movie?

Because it's just blood and gore with no story line.

I believe Isa is one of the ways in which his name is said. It's a lanuage thing, it's not like he made it up. So what's the big deal?

    What puzzles me is:
did cultures created the image of Jesus to best represent their own kind because of lack of concrete description,
or, was his image packaged in most attractive package to better market the concept of religion to particular cultures? :hmmm:

Don't waste your time with that "Passion of the Christ" movie. It doesn't have a story line or anything; it's just someone being tortured. It's pretty much a pointless gore-fest.

Heh, what if Jesus really had short hair?!

    Check out this article.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/3958241.stm

Jesus most probably didn't have long hair at all. Since he was Jewish and semitic. He most probably also wore a turban or Arabian like scarf of some sort. He probably looked no different than any average Lebanese or Palestinian. The modern Israelis are far too interbred with white Europe to be considered a proper represention of him, with the exception of Sephardic and Arab Jews.

The long hair is a universal cultural ideal of either a holy man or a rebel. In Hindu culture nearly all holy men *must* have long hair. http://www.gayatrireiki.org/contents...ound/rishi.jpg
I'm sure that ancient European Druidic and Germanic cultures portrayed their Gods and sages with long hair too. Which is most likely where that representation of long-haired Jesus comes from.

EDIT: Never saw Passion of the Christ but it is like any old Mel Gibson movie. The ending is an hour of him getting tortured or so I've heard

JC didn't look anything like his portrayals. They are all pretty much arist renditions of an image that people have generally come to accept.

He was a Jew by ethnicity (or Semite..........whatever, damn PCists.....). So he definately didn't have a long flowing golden mane like Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants depict him as.

My favorite depiction of JC is as a German. The Nazis tried to turn Jesus into a german for propaganda purposes.

Actually, he probably did. Apparently, the style of the time was to have a beard and short hair.

Unless you were a real fan, I wouldn't bother. The book is always better anyway.

You can call Nietzsche by whatever name you want.

EDIT: sorry I guess you meant that for adnan.

    @Master Adnin

Told you some Christians wouldn't be comfortable with painting Jesus in Islamic language. Especially since the Christians called shotgun on Jesus about 600 years before the Muslims.

I'm not trying to get anyone excited. I'm just calling him by the Arabic name, nothing more. Oh and by the way, my Prophet, Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) has been called many bad-bad names by many members on this forum, I have never overeacted to them, as you should either with me calling Jesus Hazarat Isa(PBUH).

    salaam,
