Default First BS Unit? - Hungarian Battlefield Assassins

    Yeah..

However, lets not cry wolf yet. CA has done an extremely good job at staying accurate when it comes to unique units and I'm sure we've all come to the realisation that Europe has had some extremely strange warriors. I mean the Saxon werewolves, those terror knights of Bohemia made up of former serial killers, murderers, rapists, etc, plus all those oddities that we read of in the EB previews of thier different factions.

So, perhaps these battlefield assassins do have some historical basis. Slavs were excellent geurilla warriors afterall were they not? Perhaps one of our Slavic/Hungarian historians will shed some light on the possible basis for this unit?

Just a bit strange but CA did it for STW too. Remember the Battlefield Ninjas and Kensai Swordmasters :hmmm:

    I could care less.

Who cares if its a "BS" unit. It adds fun and flair. Its beginning to get tiring constantly seeing people "ragging on CA's cord" to quote the simpsons. TW has never been about historical simulation so why always bug CA about it.

Don't care if they are BS or not.
They sound cool and hopefully will be fun to both face and have on the battlefield.

The Night Attack (Romanian: Atacul de noapte) was a skirmish fought between Vlad III Dracula of Wallachia and Mehmed II of the Ottoman Empire. The conflict initially started with Dracula's refusal to pay tribute to the Porte and elevated in size when Dracula invaded Bulgaria and impaled over 23,000 Turks and Bulgarians. Mehmed then raised a great army with the objective to conquer Wallachia and annex it to his empire. The two leaders fought a series of skirmishes, the most notable one being the Night Attack where Dracula attacked the Turkish camp in the night in an attempt to kill Mehmed. The assassination attempt failed and Mehmed marched to the Wallachian capital of Târgovişte where he witnessed another 20,000 impaled Turks and Bulgarians. The morale of the Sultan and his troops was demolished and the Turks retreated.

This could be a possible link to the battlefield assassins as it was not the only attempt.

What is unrealistic about that? They were people with weapons. They had that im medieval times.

Caius, no one was bashing CA, the topic was made with the intention of learning how much BS they are and how much they arent.

I'm still waiting on a Slavic historian to comment, maybe on of the ChivTW guys will see this.

And Reiks, I thought that at first too but that raid was just conventional warfare in the form of a sneak attack.

How about a Hungarian "someone" instead of a Slavic? (hungary is not slavic)

They were accounts for battlefield assassins, at the attempt of taking the hungarian crown, before Laszlo I. was made king.

give me a sec and let me find the most accurate info for a good description of what happened and how they assasinated several top-dog warlords in Hungary ....

Hungary is not slavic, but Hungarian kingdom had more than half nonhungarian ethnics, like Vlachs, Croats, Slovaks, Rusyns, Germans

Though I don't know of instances where hungarian assassins were used in battles, as Cao Cao mentioned Bohemian Varlets (pagan with face paints) were the equivalent of medieval special ops. They have earned fame during Barbarosa's Italian campaign where they baited enemy to attack, bridged rivers and contructed bridges, scalled the walls to bridge defenses, etc.

Hope Archer can add to this.

Well, FYI magyars were never the majority in the Kingdom of Hungary, the Slavs were.
It was a multiethnic state, and such was also the army.

I've never heard of this kind of unit, certainly it doesn't seem to be Hungarian-exclusive.
I can't think of any major encounter where the Hungarian army killed the opposing monarch.

Yep, this was a "WTF?" moment for me too.

However CA has always added some not entirely historically accurate units in their games.

I don't mind it really and it helps keep factions from having to many identical units.

It also gives modders a unit that, along with probably a dozen or more others, will be the first to go.

they look good, unit name is cool. doesnt matter to me if they aren't completely accurate, so i agree with Caius. These units just bring something extra to the game
