Default Play total war without CD

Hi all, I bought the retailed version of Medieval II and Kingdoms when they were first released and recently with SS 7.0 on the horizon I restarted playing around with Kingdom mods abit and having to keep the CD inserted, the computer makes random unpleasant noise occasionally. Just want to ask, is it possible to play my retailed version of ME and Kingdoms without the CD?
(Oh and I did try to activate my codes on steam, but since the copies I bought were ancient, steam dosent recognise them)
    Many thanks!
Reg: They've taken everything we had and what have they ever given us in return!?
Xerxes: The aqueduct. Reg: Oh yeah, yeah they gave us that. Yeah that's true.
    Activist 1: And the sanitation!
Stan: Oh yes...sanitation, Reg you remember what the city used to be like.
Reg: all right, that's two things that the Romans have done...
    Matthias: And the roads...
Reg: Well yes obviously the roads goes without saying. But apart from...
    Activist 2, 3, 4, 5: Irrigation...Medicine...Education...and the wine...
Francis: Yeah the wine. That's something we'd really miss if the Romans left.

The only legit way with the dvd version is the disc in the drive. The other option is if Steam is having a sale and buy a new copy.

Software companies have been using this as part of their copy protection for over ten years that I've been playing computer games. Some of the old floppy disc versions had it way back when.
