Default Italy's Senate expels ex-PM Silvio Berlusconi

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-25128115

The Italian Senate has voted to expel ex-Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi from parliament with immediate effect over his conviction for tax fraud.Berlusconi, who has dominated politics for 20 years, could now face arrest over other criminal cases as he has lost his immunity from prosecution.
He told supporters in Rome it was a "day of mourning" for democracy.
Ahead of the vote, he vowed to remain in politics to lead his Forza Italia in a "fight for the good of Italy".
A defiant Berlusconi told supporters gathered outside his Rome residence that "no political leader has suffered a persecution such as I have lived through".
He said: "It is a bitter day, a day of mourning."
Berlusconi, 77, said his struggle would continue outside parliament.
He said: "We must stay on the field, we must not despair if the leader of the centre-right is not a senator any more. There are leaders of other parties who are not parliamentarians."
The vote marks the end of a process which determines that Berlusconi cannot take part in any general election for six years.
The BBC's Alan Johnston in Rome says that Berlusconi has been flung out of parliament in the most humiliating of circumstances - effectively told that as a convicted felon he is no longer fit for public office.
Our correspondent says that, while there is no question this is a major blow to the former PM's political ambitions, the Berlusconi show is far from over - he will continue to lead Forza Italia outside parliament, a party that has considerable electoral support.
    Ineligible
The debate in the Senate had been heated, with two rival senators nearly coming to blows.
Manuela Ripetti of Berlusconi's Forza Italia party shouted: "Your only aim is to eliminate Silvio Berlusconi!"
No formal vote was held, but senators rejected a series of challenges from Berlusconi's supporters.
The Senate speaker then declared the three-time prime minister ineligible for a seat.
"The conclusions of the committee on elections have been approved, abolishing the election of senator Silvio Berlusconi," Speaker Pietro Grasso said.
After the vote, Beppe Grillo, the leader of the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement, tweeted: "Berlusconi has been expelled by the Senate. One is out. Now we must evict all the others from the House."
Berlusconi was convicted of tax fraud in October 2012 over deals his firm Mediaset made to purchase TV rights to US films. The verdict was upheld in August.
He will have to serve a one-year sentence, probably under house arrest or by doing community service because of his age.
He has also been convicted of paying for sex with an underage prostitute and of a breach of confidentiality over a police wiretap. He is appealing against both convictions.
Earlier this year, Berlusconi tried to topple the coalition government of Enrico Letta.
However, a group of Forza Italia dissidents led by Angelino Alfano broke away and Berlusconi backed down during a confidence vote when it was clear he would not get the support he needed.
    Mr Alfano opposed Berlusconi's expulsion.
"It is an ugly day for parliament and for Italy. Parliament has expelled a man millions had voted for," Mr Alfano said.
Berlusconi had formally withdrawn Forza Italia from Mr Letta's coalition on Tuesday, but the administration won another vote of confidence and passed the budget.

Well this is a great day for Italy, for sure one of the most negative phases of our political history is finished. Hope for the future we will chose wisely our leaders.

It seems that Democracy is functional in Italy.Let it be an example for other countries as well.
Quem faz injúria vil e sem razão,Com forças e poder em que está posto,Não vence; que a vitória verdadeira É saber ter justiça nua e inteira-He who, solely to oppress,Employs or martial force, or power, achieves No victory; but a true victory Is gained, when justice triumphs and prevails.

A day of mourning indeed. Italy will never be the same without him.

I still find it amazing that he has a hot Italian girlfriend who is my f-ing age. Good god, he's like...five decades older than her! Goes to show that power is an aphrodisiac. However, she might not find him too appealing for much longer, seeing how he's losing much of his power.

You have to admire the egocentricity of a guy who says we should mourn the loss of democracy because one man (i.e. him) has been rightfully accused of wrongdoing and forced out of office.

Silvio Berlusconi still has large popularity (about 20%) and even outside of the Senate will lead Forza Italia. He also has his media empire and his billions. His opponents have time and again said "We're done with Silvio" in the past and they've been proven wrong. We will see what future actually holds for the man that has so much influenced Italy's politics the past 20 years but I'm not sure Silvio is defeated.

Berlusconi will not be able to effectively do politics in the next year, he will be severly hindered in his movements and communications. He mantains the economical/media power that could allow him to indirectly have a 15% support (more or less) but it's uncertain if that would be enough to maintain leverage in the following goverments and in any case he is now fully vulnerable to the remaining trials. This is the lowest point for him, I think he will follow people like Craxi and end his days in a sort of exile from Italy.

Or he will give the green light to his media empire, and they will start inciting unrest, which will cause severe problems for the thin majority the government has in the senate.

While the majority in the senate is not big enough to be overly confident, majority of only 8 senators, Berlusconi can't do much.It took him almost two years to destroy Prodi's last thin majority (smaller than the present) through massive media campaing and large scale corruption (which has led to a trial Berlusconi is very worried about) and Alfano's new rightwing party/movement is overly attached to the hovernment's destiny, they broke off with Berlusconi to keep their posts and they need time to organize themselves for a possible self-run election.Further more, PD can't possibly end their support to the government considering is mostly led by PD; it looks like the much needed stability (for Italy and EU sake) will be ensured at least until sping 2015, though the ability to reform in this period will be an entire different matter.

Good to know. As for Alfano&Co... They're too close to Berlusconi and they will be in the goverment when it passes unpopular measures, which will erode their possible electorate. Silvio will poach many of their supporters I think in the future, when unpopular measures pass.

Unpopular measures in Italy are unpopular to the status quo, lobbies and ect. They are not for the electoral mass who knows that hard choices must be done, Berlusconi will keep his core but I don't think he will expand.
