Default Maintaining Unit cohesion in battle?

When fighting, units start to lose cohesion and formation and start to spread out, is there anyway to mod the distance that they spread, in order to reduce it. Ive searched around in the files but havent found anything useful.

Put them on the guard mode. And hire disciplined professionals.

I have tried putting them in guard mode, and modding them to be disciplined but they still spread out, what im looking for is like a phalanx but for heavy infantry and spearmen, i tried to put the phalanx as an extra formation for those units but always had ctd whenever they moved or when the enemy started routing.

When the army starts routing, you can't control it, hence you can't give them instructions to stay in formation. Also, if you give the command to move forward, the units stay in formation.

I guess the error has something to do with the pike animations that are suppose to play after the immediate combat is over, which the heavy infantry and spearmen are missing. But im not sure, does anyone know if giving the phalanx formation to non pike units is possible?
