Here's a couple things I pulled up:

Yup, they aren't actually cruise missiles, just small.. Umm.. I don't know. Could someone post some information about them? But they sure were used those times.

The Timurids did use rocket launchers in history. You are thinking of modfern rocket launchers, wheras the ones used by the Timurids are more like fireworks.

fireworks ok but using it as a weapon I'm convinced because of wikipedia tells it so but still it wasn't used that frequently

And how many times in playing RTW did you encounter armies that consisted of its fantasy units?Originally Posted by Aether
i hardly recal seeing units of those roman guys with 2 swords.... (arcani?)....
now take into mind that MTW2 has unit pools that limit even further the ability to command or encounter armies made up of only elite units...
no point in moaning at all.
Well i know the chinese used this type of weapon quite a bit, check out the links Cuahchiqueh provided.

They were certianly used at the sige of constanopile, often the rocket is attached to a blade, so that when launched the blade comes down spinning madly. Sure it would do some damage if it hit ya, but it was mainly just a "WTF...." moment for the enemy....

There are references to this sort of thing from all over the world in the 13th century. Al-Rammah talks about and gives recipes for rockets around 1280, for example. Their primary purpose was psychological - in the same chapter referencing rockets, the unattributed arabic St.Petersburgh manuscript (mid-to-late 13th century or early 14th century prescribes firecrackers mounted on sticks being used to scare horses and other bang-bang, Bacon talks of it as a psychological weapon, a norwegian source from 1280 or so describes gunpowder as a way to scare men unaccustomed to it, etc. The fire arrows were more battlefield weapons, but they were not explosive. So rockets were there, but they were hardly, as people say, Cruise missiles. They were scary bang-bang devices or a novel way to fire lots of arrows with little accuracy but an unnerving sound. The very earliest "cannon" functioned more like pellet-throwing scary flame weapons as well - their effects were typically not described as very efficient. Rocket artillery receives steady improvement thorough the 16th-19th centuries, primarily in India, and becomes more useful as a battlefield (although it turns more and more into a siege device) weapon.

yeah like me I just had that moment when opening this topic. It's the first time I heard of it.
Rocket launchers, handgranades, flame throwers where around before the medieval period.
CA stated in the podcast that these weapons will be rare atleast from the AI.
What you do is your own choice.
Exactly, they may have not used the same names (Naptha, Greek Fire) but there were indeed primitive bombs & flamethrowers.Originally Posted by Swe_gamer
Knight_Yellow has a good point too, the unit pool sounds like it's not going to let you recruit 5 sets of Cannon Elephants at once so I wouldn't worry too much about armies of unique units.
Plus, the rocket launchers are nothing more than morale drainers, they may hit something here and there but they aren't going to be MLRS' blasting medieval castles to bits with ease.

You can recruit 5 elephants at once if you have 5 cities that have that ability. It's just that it'll take a long time for the city to replenish that unit before becoming recruitable again.
But yes another one of those pointless outrage threads....
