Hey, so I had an idea for an interesting Stainless Steel Hotseat scenario. In it, the Golden Horde controls ~40% of the map, with the rest of Europe and the Middle East having to unite and coordinate to stand against them. It would be designed for 4-6 players, with one playing the Mongols and the others taking control of multiple allied factions. Here is a screenshot of the map:
Progress:
~60% done (still need to balance, change starting religious percentages, and position armies)
The Mongols would rule Persia, the Cuman Khanate (Threatening Kiev and the Crimea), Mesopotamia, the Holy Land (threatening Egypt and Mecca), Greece, Hungary, Germany, and part of France. This would mean fighting on 6 fronts plus two oceans. Power-wise, they would be able to win just about any two-three fronts if they focused on them, but it would jeopardize their forces elsewhere.
The allied factions would be thus:
Novgorod: Forming the front line in Russia, they will need help from Kiev to survive.
Kiev: Slightly behind the front lines, but still in danger. Will mostly be helping Novgorod and watching their western flank.
Teutonic Order: Far behind the lines. With Lithuania conquered they will mostly be sending expeditionary forces to help their neighbors.
Poland: Screwed. Defending a long border with the Mongols with their capitol right across the border. Will have to rely on the Teutonic Order and Mongol ambivalence to survive.
Denmark: Their capitol is in easy striking distance for the Mongols, but the Mongol's lack of a North Sea Fleet allows them to raid the coastline and support their allies.
Norway: Similar to Denmark, mostly raiding the northern coast and possible helping the French.
France: Dealing with the main thrust of the Mongol attack, with a big early-game fight over Paris. Mostly just fighting for survival and hoping the Mongols divert forces away to other fronts.
England: Powerful faction with a powerful navy. Mostly supporting the French.
Scottland: Far away from the action. Wide variety of available options.
Venice: Fighting the naval war, while at the same time holding the line in Italy against the Mongols another early game fight for their capitol.
Genoa: Similar to Venice, but also helping out on the French front and trying to hold Caffa.
Papal States: Anchoring the defenses in Italy, supporting where needed.
Sicaly: Far behind the lines. Either helping in Italy, fighting the naval war, or both.
Aragon: Helping with the war in France.
Castille: Dido.
Portugal: Dido.
Moors: Supporting the Fatamids, helping with the naval war.
Fatamids: Trying to hold the line in Sinai and keep Egypt.
Seljuks: Putting up a desperate fight around Mecca and Medina. Almost certainly doomed.
Player-wise I am thinking one person would control the Russian and Baltic factions, one would control the French/English/Spanish factions, one would control the Italians, and one would control the Muslim ones (Obviously one would play as the Mongols). This would mean faster turn-times as nobody wants to wait weeks to get their save and we won't have to replace people as often. What are your thoughts on balance? The Mongols might be a little underpowered in this scenario, what with everyone fighting them, so Scottland (and maybe Portugal/Castiile, or Denmark/Norway) might be controlled by the Mongol player and spend the game fighting the allies. Another option would be to have a rule that only one faction can win, meaning the allies would have to start fighting each other if it looked like the Mongols were loosing.
Rules-wise, I was thinking that banning or severely limiting forts might be wise considering the scale of the armies present.
What are your thoughts on the idea, factions, and balancing? Any and all feedback is appreciated.
