Default My laptop is in dire straits.

Earlier today, I was playing Europa Universalis 2 on my laptop. Suddenly, as does happen sometimes when I play the Age of Imperialism mod, the game froze. I attempted to ctrl-alt-delete out, and that sorta worked, only the computer became unresponsive when the game closed.
I restarted the computer to no avail, I would reach the log-in screen, select my account, and no go.

Two tries later, I'd get an error screen. I would select Start Windows normally, no good, bluescreen.
I select "most recent settings that work", no good, bluescreen.
The error I am getting is "Unmountable Boot Volume". Is my laptop doomed? I would like to know since I am sending it to UCONN's computer repair shop after classes tomorrow.

I'm not that competant when it comes to computers. All I know is that I can't boot up in safe mode either.

Does your university have an IT section? I'd ask there, but it does sound rather terminal... You could try and create a boot disk from another computer (hopefully your laptop will boot from the C drive last and go through the others first.

Do you have a Windows XP CD with you? If you do then this should be pretty easy to fix.

First you boot the computer with the Windows XP CD. When it's loaded it give you the option to press 'R' to go to the recovery console, so press R and it should ask you to select the disk your Windows is installed on (If you are not dual booting it won't ask you), then it asks you to input the administrator password, so input your password and you should be in the console.

After you did all that, first type "fixboot" without quotes, I think it asks you if your sure, just type "y" for yes, then when it's done type "exit" and the computer should restart normally. If it still won't boot up, go to the console again and type "fixmbr".

And if it still won't work, your best bet is to reinstall... Or take it to the store and see if they can fix it.

I just took the laptop to UCONN's computer repair place, and I've basically been told that my system cannot find Windows if I am getting such an error, essentially the machine is pretty badly damaged at a pretty core level of software, and I am better off getting a new one (lets face it, it's a 4 year old gateway, the cheapest laptop they sell at UCONN is not only less than half the price it was but is more than twice as good.)

On the other hand, a fellow down the hall claims he can fix it, which he will try and do tonight. I really figure I have nothing to do because I do not have the option of repairing it myself in the manner Incinerate mentioned.
