    New Hungarian Armies



    We are proud to present to you the newly overhauled Hungarian Unit Roster! We have worked rigorously over the last weeks to come up with a complete new and more historical accurate roster.     Rebellious Peasants



    We are proud to present to you the Rebellious Peasants of southern Germany. This faction won't be available for campaign gameplay, but you'll be able to play them in our soon released Battle Beta. Their purpose however is to represent the peasants during the German Peasants' War and also to be the shadow faction for the Swabian League. You might have had a quiet life, playing with the Swabian League, but these days are now over!

    Overhauled Balkan

    Thank's to the Tsardoms Modding Team and +Marius+' suggestions we were able to overhaul our Balkan provinces once more. With these changes you will find a more historical and accurate situation on the Balkan theatre. Venice is now in control of the coastal cities of Zara and Spalato, while the Ottomans have been relocated to their territory held in 1492. Hungary can now be found in its historic borders, especially it is now in control of Croatia and Bosnia. Also we created two new settlements 'Ostrovica', the key to Zara and 'Vranduk', an important city situated on the Bosnia River. But enough words, have a look yourself!

    Native Languages

    Thank's to "HaHawk's Native Voices Mod" Ver. 1.0 we were able to add in native voices to almost all factions. Soon we will update/add voices from Empire Total War so that at least the Turkish and Arabic generals/agents reply in their native languages.

    Faction Specific Heir Title


    Granting your heir a specific title to designate him as your successor, was quite a common practise, which we will now take into account for Italian Wars - Ultimate. Learn more about the feature below by the example of the Kingdom of France.

    As you can see, the current heir of the Kingdom of France is granted the title 'Dauphin de France', which was a depiction of the animal on their coat of arms.

    As soon as the King of France has died/been killed and the heir becomes now the new King, he losses the title 'Dauphin de France'.

    And the title is passed to the new heir.




    This feature will be applied only to certain factions. These are:

    - Kingdom of Hungary: Joint King of Hungary

    As you may recall, we have already added several royal and noble dynasties to The Italian Wars mod in version 5.0 beta. But one of the most important cities in Italy was still missing, not any more! We are proud to introduce the noble families of Venice! Not only that, we made a significant change to enhance the reality and gameplay flair for all our family dynasties.

    New Recruitment System & Buildings


    This is one of the largest changes you will have with Italian Wars - Ulitmate. A complete overhauled recruitment system. Hand in hand with several new buildings to reflect the province's significance and individuality. Our overhaul goal was to make recruitment more realistic. To carve out the faction's strengths and weaknesses. But also to force the player to consider more carefully his campaigns and moves. All in all this will have a huge impact on the gameplay of Italian Wars.


    New Buildings:

    We have added several province specific buildings. You will now find Factories of the Fugger and Welser family, Cattle Markets, Weaponsmiths, Masons, Wool Weavers, Silk Weavers, Patrician Villas and Noble Estates. While the factories, markets and craftsmen will be available only in certain regions known for this kind of craftsmanship or housing a factory of Fugger or Welser. The Patrician Villas and Noble Estates will be available faction specific. For example, you will find a Noble Estates in the Duchy of Savoy, but not in Bologna. There you would rather have a Patrician Villa.

    New Recruitment System:

    To have a more realistic recruitment for Italian Wars - Ultimate we decided to abandon our previous approach, where you will have all units available in one to three buildings. You see, back than it was not signing up for military service like it was today. No, you would have several institutions or places from which you had to draw your men and soldiers from. So now you will have the units available in their respective place of origin. You will have your peasantry available at farms, your militias either on a training ground or the city hall. Your knights and nobles will be recruited form their estates and villas, etc.

    Area of Recruitment


    Nothing new to MTW II veterans, but for Italian Wars. An Area of Recruitment system. I think we can all agree that this feature was quite overdue, so here we go. Our AoR will be explained by the example of the Republic of Venice and the Kingdom of France.


    Area of Recruitment - Default Situation:

    Our AoR system consisted of different kind of layers. Layered above each other you will have your available units in a certain province. There are two layers. High tier troops layer and low tier troops layer. The high tier troops layer specifies which high tier units will be available in a certain province. Like knights or highly trained late professionals. The second layer does simply the same only for the low tier troops. A picture says more than a thousand words, so check out the details below:

    In your home province (for our example, Venetia -> Republic of Venice) you will have your complete unit roster available.

    The high tier troops layer is split up in three zones: 'home', 'border' and 'faroff'. So in case you are leaving your home provinces, but you are still near by, you will have the actual AoR units available, along with your low tier troops.

    In case of the low tier troops, their layer only has one zone. Which is depending on the province's culture. For example 'North Italy'. So if you are in a province with this type of influence you will have your low tier troops still available.

    In any case, if you are far beyond your home province you will be in the 'faroff' zone. This means only AoR units available.

    Area of Recruitment - Spanish Situation:

    In case you play the Kingdom of Spain, you will face a complete different situation. The Spanish faction is far away from their actual 'home' province Spain. So you are depending on supply by Ships from the Spanish main land. This means you will have your complete roster only available in certain cities with a large enough harbour, like Palermo, Naples, Genoa, Piombino, etc.

    As soon as you move away from your 'precious' harbours you will be in the border zone. This means only low tier and AoR units are available for you. 'Faroff' is the same as the default situation.

    Area of Recruitment - Ottoman Situation:

    The Ottoman Situation is quite similar to the one of the Spaniards. The Ottomans do not have an actual foothold in their new provinces. That means, it will be quite hard to recruit your high tier troops. Your high tier troops will be only available in large enough cities, like Sarajevo, Zagreb or Buda.

    Even near by, you will only have the local AoR units available.

    But don't you worry. There is of course a way to get some of your troops, even far away from your recruitment centres. Simply, when you build new farms the Sipahi which received this farm land, will become available. No matter in which region, province or zone.

    Specific Faction Leader Titles


    During the first decades of the Italian Wars the main focus was on the Kingdom of Naples and the Duchy of Milan. Of course, you guys already knew that. Though the thing, that annoyed us with all the previous versions was, if your general conquered one of the above named capitals, he would receive the full title. Which of course he would have never received, since he was in the service of a certain king/liege Lord.

    For Italian Wars - Ultimate we decided to 'fix' this inconsistency. Please check out, our latest update - Specific Faction Leader Titles!



    The Scenario - France has conquered the city of Milan

    As you can see, the Kingdom of France has conquered the city of Milan. The general in command receives now the title of Governor-General of Milan.

    Yes, it is a rather short preview. Nevertheless an important one, which brings more realism to the Italian Wars.

    As a condottiere, even a minor Italian noble was able to build up a reputation as great commander and soldier, but also gain a fortune to finance his renaissance lifestyle. The system of condotta has evolved in Italy through several centuries and found its end during the Italian Wars. Nevertheless, it was at that time, a major income to minor Italian lords and rulers. Therefore a very important aspect, which found its representation in our Condott-Script! Please enjoy the latest preview for the Italian Wars mod! Buona fortuna condottiere!



    Condotta - Start

    The King of France has declared war on the Kingdom of Naples, as you are an ally of the King of France, he requests your service as a condottiere.

    Of course you are happy to sign up and start negotiating your condotta!

    Naturally, you need a suitable candidate for this endeavour.. so you select a character fit for the job and proper age.

    Now you have your condottiere! The condottiere has several duties, in order to please is employer and bring honour to his family.

    Signore,
    good choice! The name of your choice was added to the contract and has received the necessary privileges to assemble his troops. He is ready to seize command and initiate action against the hostile faction. God and good fortune be with him!\n\nEffects: Condotto contract was successfully signed and is now active. Your selected character has received the appropriate trait and can now call himself a real condottiere.\n\nThe Condotta-Script:
    Your selected character is from now on your captain of fortune. Protect him at all costs, because in case of death your condotto will expire.

    Action: You need to actively take action against the now hostile faction you signed up against. That means you have to fight their armies, lay siege to their cites and pillage their lands.

    Action points: At the start of your condotta you have received 10 action points, these points will decrease by 1 each turn in case your character stays idle. Idle means not performing on of the following actions:

    Assaulting a hostile army or city - 1 action point
    Conquering a city - 3 action points

    In case you should drop below 4 action points you will receive a warning message by your employer faction. In case your action point hit 0 your condotta will be revoked and your reputation will suffer.

    Condotta Expires: Your condotta can expire due the following reasons:

    Peace between your employer and hostile faction, you attacked your employer, you failed to take action against the hostile faction.

    Payment: Your employer will send you now quarterly payments according to your negotiated terms. Be aware of the Renaissance people's habit of paying their debts....

    One last piece of advice, even if your own faction has agreed to peace with your hostile faction but your employer did not, the condotta still we be active. Therefore you are still liable for not taking action.


    Well, surely the danger you put your family member in is worth some money. Indeed it is, your legate was able to negotiate a prestigious condotta for your character. You can count yourself lucky, next time the terms might not be so favourable.

    Condotta - Campaigning

    It seems your employer is quite flexible in terms of paying your services.. well, he luckily paid you last quarter. Let's hope this was just a misunderstanding.

    As things stand, your action was obviously too little. Your employer demands that you finally take the field against the hostile faction you signed up for.

    Condotta - End

    Oh shoot, you have failed to fulfil your duties as a condottiere captain.. the consequences are quite severe!

    As a result of his campaigning in the field your character was able to secure some skills, even he is not in active service any more.

    Several new and especially minor factions were added to the version of the Italian Wars - Ultimate. These factions mostly lack huge territories, though they have the chance to gain reputation and land by signing up a condotta with the more powerful factions.

    This feature will be available for the following factions:

    • Margraviate of Montferrat
    • Duchy of Urbino
    • Duchy of Ferrara & Modena
    • Signoria of Bologna
    • Margravate of Mantua

    Recruitment Limitation Script


    This script has a bit of a history. First it was developed by the DLV Team for their mod, which inspired me to create a recruitment limitation script myself for the Italian Wars. Especially in the context of major and minor factions, which should be limited in their amount of troops they can sustain in the field. My first attempt for version 4.0 failed and was not fully functional. Gigantus did lend me a hand and made several improvements and finally even successfully implemented it into the EB mod. Now after some time I started a second attempt, which was a full success and I was able to adjust the script into the Italian Wars mod. Please enjoy this new feature introduced to the Italian Wars - Ultimate version.



    Basics of the Recruitment Limitation script

    Every faction starts with the certain amount of available slots in their pool. The size of the pool is determined by the amount and size of settlements it controls. So the larger a settlement is and the more settlements you control, the more points for the pool you get. You can increase the pool's size by either expanding your realm or upgrading your settlements. Of course, the pool will decrease if you should loose a settlement.

    Within the size of your faction specific pool you can recruit as many units as you want. It is basically a point system, where each unit has a value in points. E.g. light infantry has 1 point, but heavy cavalry has 3 or for instance heavy infantry adds 2 points.

    So in case the amount of points exceeds the size of your current pool, your recruitment slots within the settlements got deactivated and till you either increase the size of your pool or decrease the amount of points of your units, you can not recruit any new ones.

    So basically the amount of troops you can sustain is limited to the amount and size of settlements you control.

    How the script works in game

    To illustrate my bla bla above here an example on how it works in game on the Republic of Siena.

    First we recruit some cool units, heavy cavalry and heavy infantry units.

    So what happens in the next turn, after the units are fully recruited, is you will receive an event which informs you about the exceeding of your funds.

    Looking at your recruitment queue, no units are available.

    To make some space we disband some of our units again and see what happens.

    At the start of the next turn we'll get the message that our funds are sufficient again.

    This feature is going to be applied to all factions available to the player.


    Gameplay impact:

    Since now you need to be more careful about your recruiting strategy, mercenaries seem to be the right option and yes they are! Mercenaries or any spawned condottiere will not be taken into account of the script. So in case you are a minor Italian power facing a war you should strengthen your armies with several mercenaries. The richer you are, the more you can afford of course
