    Republic of Genoa

    Leader: Doge Agostino Adorno

In the last four centuries, Genoa was able, thanks to its efficient power politics, to gain a place among the four greatest Italian maritime republics. With the help of shrewd merchants and intrepid navigators the Genoese colonies extend to the Black Sea, and the immense wealth of the Republic is reflected in the Banco di San Giorgio and other magnificent buildings.
But as it is wealth causes envy, and envy leads to war. Surrounded by power hungry and more powerful neighbours, Genoa is in an awkward situation. Shall you ask for support from the French king, or even the Emperor? How responds the powerful Borgia Pope in Rome to the Genoese expansion plans? Will Genoa be lost in the turmoil of the time and easily assimilated by one of his more powerful neighbours or will it become under an ambitious leader more powerfull than ever?

Strength: Supreme marines und enhanced trade
Weakness: Weak starting position, powerfull neighbours

Historic Buildings: Lighthouse of Genoa, Banko di San Giorgio

Every new faction get its unique buildings/sights, this buildings should represent the uniqueness and "personality" of every single faction.

Here, you can see the buildings for the Republic of Genoa

Spoiler for Banco di San Giorgio

Already built from the first Doge in the 13th century the Banco di San Giorgio is the financial heart of Genoa. Because some of the most influential families of the Republic, including such famous names as the Grimaldis, were involved in its creation, it is often difficult to determine where the power of the bank ends and the Republic begins.
Since the bank is one of the main financier of the Genoese colonial enterprises, it represents one of the most important pillars of the Maritime Republic of Genoa. The respective ruler has the possibility to grant lucrative loans.

Effect: A 10% chance in every turn to grant a credit.

    Spoiler for Lighthouse of Genoa

This imposing lighthouse (Italian. Torre della Lanterna di Genova) has become the main symbol of Genoa, in addition to its function as a nocturnal navigation aid. First mentioned in 1128, the 76 meter high lighthouse symbolizes the urge of Genoa to explore the sea, and also to master it.

    Effect: Increased trade income

    Margravate of Mantua

    Leader: Margrave Francesco II.Gonzaga

Due to its strategic position as buffer state between the Duchy of Milan, Parma-Piacenzau and Ferrara-Modena at the one hand and the Republic of Venice and the Papal States on the other, the Margravate of Mantua plays an important role in the struggles of Italy. Invigorated by the marriage with Isabella d'Este, and its accompanying alliance with the Duchy of Ferarra, the ambitious Margrave Francesco II. Gonzaga strives for power and prestige. But the enemies are at hand and numerous, only a wise and predictive ruler will be able to prevail in such troublesome times.

    Republic of Siena

    Leader: Pandolfo Petrucci

The Republic of Siena has a long history, started out from the legendary founding by the sons of Remus. According to legend, the children of Remus, Senio and Aschio, had to flee Rome, due their father's lost conflict with Romulus. They arrived at the shores of the river Tressa and built the Castel Senio (nowadays Castelvecchio) on a near hillside. The black and white smoke of their fanned fire, became the colours of the city of Siena (Balzana). Since the year dot, Siena is a bitter enemy to Florence and a supporter of Papal authority in Italy. As ingrained Ghibellines, the Senesi are not open-minded to any of the German Emperors intentions in Italy. A conflict between the Pope and the Emperor would test the Republic, once more.

    Hello fellows,

before my holidays, I'd like to show you a new features of version 5.0.
    Family Dynasties

This feature is added to the Papal States, Republic of Siena and the Republic of Ragusa.

An Anc displays the specific family coat of arms. Respective, there are to trait levels.
In case the current leader belongs to the same family as the character, so the character will receive the trait with postive effects,
according to that, he will get the one with negative effects, if the leader is not from his family.
Since his family would never support a rival family, wouldn't they?
Of course, if a new leader has been choosen, belonging to a new family,
    the traits will change accordingly.

These are the families for Siena:
    Spoiler for Borghese

    Spoiler for Chigi

    Spoiler for Petrucci

    Spoiler for Salimbeni

These are the families for the Papal States:
    Spoiler for Baglioni

    Spoiler for Borgia

    Spoiler for Colonna

    Spoiler for Della Rovere

    Spoiler for Orsini

I have tried to represent the character of each family with respective attributes

    Cheers,
    Ned

    Dear fellows,

    I know, I shouldn't have done this, but I couldn't resist..
I scaled the current TIW map and overworked the files, so we have a more detailed map.
But as things are, I won't have time to finish it.. sadly, but I'd not dare to keep it from you guys

Italian Wars - Ultimate | Map - Preview

As I have already announced, the work on the new map is done.
Actually, the new map is just a more detailed version of the previous one.
The map now includes 188 provinces in total, 51 completely new. Since I don't want to spoil the fun, I only show you the parts with the most radical changes.

    Spoiler for Burgundy

Several new provinces were added to the region of Burgundy, to represent the territory of the Swiss more accuratly and to give the struggles of Valois and the Hapsburgs a decent battlefield.

    Spoiler for Dalmatia

Thank's to the more detialed map, the republics of Venice and Ragusa have now excellent opportiunities on the Dalmatian shores.

    Spoiler for Piedmont

Piedmont was reworked rigourously. There are now several ways to intervene in Lombardy. Besides the newly added factions Savoy and Montferrat have more than enough opportiunities to enlarge their yet small territories.

    Spoiler for Sardinia

Sardinia, one of the most import stations on the between the Spanish mainland and the Italian theator of war.

    Spoiler for Tuscany, Romagna, March

With many new provinces, the middle of Italy is ready to become a major field of battle, intrigies and great deeds!

    Regards,

    Duchy of Savoy

Leader: Duke Charles II. of Savoy

Due a succession of weak and short living Dukes, the Duchy of Savoy became more and more dependent to the Royal Crown of France. Especially, since the current Duke, Charles II, is still a child and his mother Blanche of Montferrat is the actual ruler over the Duchy. Though, it is still officially a vassal of the Holy Roman Empire and also being a constituent member of the Upper Rhenish Circle.

The only hope for the people of Savoy is now, that their Duke will grow up fast and become a powerful ruler. Otherwise it is most likely, that the Duchy will be crushed in the upcoming storm, which is rising on the horizon.

    Signoria of Bologna

    Leader: Giovanni II. Bentivoglio

The city of Bologna commands the highways between northern and southern Italy, which made it one of the wealthiest cities in whole Italy. But not only that, the city accommodates the oldest university of the known world and thus is a center for scholarship in Europe. Though as for all larger Italian communities, Bologna is also cursed by factions and internal struggles. Along with the families of the Pepoli, Malvezzi and Gozzadini, the Bentivoglio were able to establish themselves as sole ruler over city during the 15th century.

Giovanni II., the current head of the family and former Condottiere in the service of Florence, is ruling Bologna with an iron fist, all opposition to his rule is whipped out ruthlessly. However many well-known artists are gathering at his court and he is already considered one of the greatest builder of Italy. If the Bentivogli want to keep ruling their beloved city, they have to match the approaching events, also because the other families are eagerly awaiting their chance to overthrow them.

    Hafsid Caliphate

    Leader: Caliph Muhammad V

The dynasty of the Hafisds, once an influential and true vassal of the Almohads, gained independence in the early 13th century, by pure calculation and the advantage of current unrests. The Hafsid Caliphs ruled the Ifrīqiya, which includes Tunisia, Algeria, and Tripolitania. The dominated even Morocco temporarily. But bitter backstrokes lead to a decline, also the rigorous advance by the European powers against the Hafsid piracy. Internal struggles did the rest, along with the independence efforts of several local tribesmen. Only a strong and determined Caliph will be able to lead the Hafisds to their former greatness.

Strength: Relies on swift cavalry and African mercenaries.
Weakness: Lacks heavy infantry and professional troops.

    Spoiler for Souks

The souks, traditional market districts, are the heart of every Arab city. Each craft branch and each guild has its own street, and the narrow and crowded streets are full of life. Here is the center of local and oversea trade, as well as the financial and credit system. The prosperity of the whole of Ifriqiya is based on the souks. Merchants, who have learned their craft here, can subsist everywhere and do not need to be afraid of hostile takeovers.

    Spoiler for Madrasat al-Ma'rad

The Madrasat al-Ma'rad translated “place of study”, was built in 1295 by Muhammad II. It has become a well-known stronghold of learning throughout the Muslim world. Only the most pious and learned believers may enjoy the privilege to hear the word of Allah and study the correct interpretation of the Koran. This facility produces the most able imams the Muslim world has ever seen.

    Duchy of Urbino

    Leader: Guidobaldo da Montefeltro

The Duchy of Urbino is a new creation, elevated to ducal status only in recent decades. It may in that sense be the child of the peninsula, but it is a gifted one. The policies of the ruling Montefeltro dynasty have made Urbino a central hub of the Italian Renaissance, with della Francesca, Santi, and di Giorgio Martini all in residence at court. But cultural excellence does not equate to military power: Urbino is weak. To the north, the Republic of Venice seeks another Adriatic port for its empire; to the south, the Papacy which gifted the Duchy could just as easily take it away. In order to prosper, Urbino must avoid a two-front war, and use the impending French invasion to its advantage.

    Strength: Great renaissance court
    Weakness: Military weak

    Margraviate of Montferrat

    Leader: Boniface III Palaeologus

As of 1493, the Margraviate of Montferrat stands on the precipice of two dramatic changes. On the one hand the elderly marquess, Boniface III, is withered by age and soon to die. On the other, the Margraviate stands directly in the path of the impending French invasion of Italy. Diplomacy must be key to Montferrat's strategy if it is to survive these changes. The pro-French policies of Boniface and his heir William have staved off French aggression at the price of French interference, at least to this point. The marquess' niece Blanche currently rules Savoy as regent for her son Duke Charles II, ensuring peace from the west. But the infant is sickly, and Savoy may soon fall out of the control of Boniface's family. Alliances can collapse rapidly in the claustrophobic atmosphere of northern Italy. But what other choices does Montferrat have? To the north-east, Milan is rich, powerful, and intractably hostile to France and her allies - Montferrat among them. To the south, Genoa is sympathetic to France; it may make a useful ally, at least in the short term. One thing is clear: the elderly marquess may boast all he likes of the strength of the Casale wine-trade and his noble descent from the Byzantine emperors, but he must now select a side to take. France, or Milan? Montferrat must make the choice quickly, but can ill afford to get it wrong.

    Machiavelli's Military Reforms

Niccol Machiavelli, currently secretary of the war chancellery, has come up with a suggestion how we might become independent of the expensive and unreliable mercenaries and free soldiers. He plans to expand the militia system and organise citizens in permanent, well trained units. These would be less expensive and more reliable in battle than mercenaries with the sole disadvantage that citizens cannot be recruited in such numbers as mercenaries. Signore Machiavelli estimates that 15000 florins should suffice to build new armouries and training grounds and pay for the improved training of the militia. Do you wish to agree to this?
You all know this event, since we had it implemented in 4.0. Though the reform was somewhat thin for 15000 florins and that is why we have overhauled the units for this event. This might not be fully historical accurate, nevertheless we are certain that you will enjoy this new feature. The units shown below are going to replace the complete roster of the Signoria of Florence, but only if the Medici are banned from the city and as long as you are still a republic and not have declared the Grand Duchy of Tuscany!

These units were created according to Machiavelli's book Dell’Arte della Guerra. So you will have Regular, Extraordinary Pikemen and Veliti, but also the Scudati, light Cavalry and Gendarmes, ready for your command. The artillery will remain untouched, since Machiavelli considered them as already sufficient. Some units might not look very different to their predecessors, but they are definitely better trained and much more efficient during battle. Therefore, the turns for their recruitment were increased and their maintenance is much more costly, than for the "normal" militias.

    Area of Recruitment

After almost a complete month off, our team is back on track and proudly presents to you a very new feature for Italian Wars - Ultimate, Area of Recruitment!

As you might know already, an Area of Recruitment aims to add a more "realistic" recruitment situation to the game. For example, the Kingdom of France wouldn't be "normally" able to recruit some Lyonnese Pikemen in Tuscany. Well, therefore each faction will have its respective "home province or provinces", for our example Kingdom of France, Burgundy and Provence. In this home provinces the faction is able to recruit all of its units without any restrictions. The next level is called "border". As the name already reveals, closer to the border the availability of troops is not that consistent as it might be in the "home province", therefore the faction will have its roster with only the basic units. For instance Spear Militias, Crossbowmen, etc. In the case of France, Swabia, Swiss, Piedmont and Liguria. The last level is named "far off". Well, yes, it simply means that there are no links to the faction's culture in these provinces. Because of that, no units will be available from the normal roster, except for the AoR-Units. These AoR-Units are of course already available in the "border provinces", as well

Since it would be to overwhelming for you and for us a far too huge effort to present and introduce each region, we picked three significant ones.
Each region has of course its own roster, though you might notice some similarities between them, for example between Bavaria, Swabia and the Heredity Lands.
Nevertheless, each roster has its unique set of colours and crests, according to its respective origin.

Currently, we have discussion among our team about the artillery units. Should they be available as AoR units as well or are they too unique to be available far off from home? What do you think and let us know here!
