Need help with save files, please help!!!!

So I have been wanting to join some TATW Hotseats for a while now and finally asked to join. The problem is I have not been able to load the save file the other players have been trying to send to me. I do not understand why the saves aren't working. Every time I try and load the game up it brings me to one loading screen next it randomly changes the loading screen picture and the quote disappears then brings me to the main menu. I even downloaded a random save file from another hotseat wondering if it was the file was corrupted or something.
I am not sure what is causing this problem. Any help would be very much appriecated.

Do you have the same version of Medieval 2 (I will simply assume that you have the same version of TATW as your co-players have)?
Medieval 2 Kingdoms is v1.04, or 1.4 (it's called both), but can be patched to 1.05/1.5.
If you do not have the same version it will not work for you to play their saves and vice versa
