Default War of the Roses submod

    Hello gents,

I was wondering if the War of the Roses submod for SS 6.4 is completely dead. I hope not and if so, then it robs the 15th century English aspect of the campaign of perhaps it's most important internal conflict, one that not only replaced one line of the Plantagenet dynasty with another, but one that in turn replaced the dynasty all together with the House of Tudor. Although I am not a gifted modder, I would be happy to provide historical research for a rebirth of this project. Perhaps it might make an excellent and more historically colorful addition to the up and coming SS 7.0. In any case, this submod should be right well be brought back upon it's feet so that SS players may experience the battles between the houses, White Rose and Red Rose. That players may take part in the momentous battle of Bosworth and shape the English Monarchy in their own image.

It is even uncertain whether there will be an SS 7.0...

I have to say that this is a pretty good idea, because it adds lots of historical content with a lot information that will actually make the game funnier and *more realistic in my opinion, since it's really boring than just conquering cities and fighting against others. If only the SS team, could do this for every nation, this mod would be the best of the best (if it isn't already). Adding many historical "thingies" as I like to call them although,it is a really hard and tiring job. However, this research will take lots of time, and SS 7.0 will come even later that it was supposed to be.

    As I said,pretty good idea!

    *Repped!

Feel free to do a Wars of the Roses sub-mod - I'm sure one is possible

You'll need to decide which version of SS you want to base it on - if you want to use SS assets.
Otherwise you can start from scratch - feel free to use anything from the work done on the sub-mod either way.

If you want to study this period in history you might be interested in this course :
England in the time of King Richard III

    https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/england-of-richard-third-2014

It's free - only takes 6 weeks - and if it proves popular it should be run quite frequently.
I'm doing the first course which starts in a couple of weeks

    Should be interesting.

At one point I started to make a map for such a submod...

yes the WotR sub-mod did have a map - but there was some problem with co-ordinates which rather messed it up.

I'm surprised nobody has ever managed to put a mod like this together.

Anway i start my england in the 125th century course in a couple of days - has a section on the Wars of the Roses so should be interesting.

Are you referring to MY map-work on Blood & Roses? As it was not tested, I wouldn't be too surprised.. But nobody told me, and I'm not sure the final was ever submitted back then...

A great deal of work went into making it as large as possible within reason and to make the navigable rivers an important part of the strategy of the map.

HI L2S - didn't recognise the new avatar

I'd completely forgotten what the name of the wars of the roses mod was going to be called ah yes Blood and Roses !

(Oh don't bother with the course - anyone who has read the simplest book on the wars of the roses will have more information that the course gives.)

Unfortunately I binned everything I had on the mod, as well as all my own mods.

Can't remember exactly what happened - think I just needed to take a very long break from Stainless Steel and modding in general.

The question of whether to base the mod on SS or start from scratch I'm not sure we ever resolved. There were advantages both ways.

I also have vague recollections that I couldn't work out how best to organise the game in terms of who should be playable factions, relationship between royal families and the nobility etc.

Somewhere in there is a playable game I'm sure

If you want to base it on SS then SS6.4 looks like being the being the only version that will be complete in our life-time, work on SS7.0 looks to have come to a stop.
(It's one of the reasons I've been helping with sorting out the bugs fixes in SS6.4 - so there is a stable and playable basis for sub-mods.)

I don't think the various sub-mods, excellent though they are, will be of much use to such a specific time and place.

I still have all reference books and materials though if anyone can find a use for them. I have more spare time now, and less distractions, so if anyone wants to reboot this, or start afresh, let me know.
I may be able to contribute.

L2S's map was (is) excellent by the way, and would make a fine basis for a SS sub-mod.

I say sub-mod as I doubt there's enough modders around to start completely from scratch now.

I argued that too much of the SS mod work was irrelevant to the tighter WotR theme, and that a fresh mod that only had to integrate the unique B&R calendar scripting etc. was needed. I was also incapable to integrating with SS, since I was a DLV modder, not a SS one.

Since then I just fine tuned my own VH/VH DLV with 12 turns per year with 4 seasons etc. and have been playing that one campaign ever since.

I'd be happy to relinquish all of my latest elements of the map files, research, load screens, period portraits, and custom user interface images, to any reboot.

L2S - that is a most generous offer. hopefully all the work you put into the mod won't go to waste.

As for basing off vanilla kingdoms as opposed to SS - well one could start by using the vanilla brittania mod and messing around with that - use its map, move things around a little if necessary, update the settlements, make all settlements towns and use the castle models for the forts. One could start with just 6 factions and build from there. And try and work out how to make the game work with two claimants to the throne. One could use the EDU as is to start with, the baron's revolt scripts will suffice for the Yorkist revolt when it happens. For me trying to work out how to play the game is as big a challenge as the other modding. (Because I'll let other people do all that)

I shall have to look at the thread about Blood and Roses to see what (if anything ) is still available :

As i said -I had even forgotten the name of it, so it will be interesting to see what can be rescued.

I kept all the files anyone ever sent me when I was preparing the build to boot up and test.

For those interested, the War of the Roses Mod development has been RELAUNCHED.

As indicated in my sig. Here is the link to the new Mod thread. If we get a sizable team after the initial Alpha releases, we might press for an application for a 'hosted mod' section.

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...-the-Roses-Era

If anyone here would like to help out, appeal on the thread. Roz is compiling text, stats, scripts, and written content. I'm recruiting talent for graphical elements.
