Thread: What do you like about Rome 2

Default What do you like about Rome 2

    Seeing as there's tons of haters out there, and there's no thread discussing what is good about the game, I decided to make one. What new features do you like and what features do you think are better than in the other games(give your opinion and reason why.) Here is my own list;

There are naval battles, unlike in Rome 1, and though ships often get stuck in the center in a big mosh pit, that would have happened in real life. It makes you think of a perfect balance of how many ships you leave in reserve and how many you attack with directly.

There's deployables, at least 4 types.

There's more varied types of battles(ambush battles, combined naval and land battles/sieges, encampment battles)

    Way more factions

Province system(my opinion, some people might prefer the old system)

More diplomacy options(defensive alliance, military alliance, confederation for barbarian tribes and non aggression pacts,) and now you know how much chance you have at reaching an agreement and how what you've done affects diplomacy.

Better CAI, including the diplomacy(though maybe BAI slightly lacking, though the naval battle AI is not that bad)

More realistic units(scythed chariots instead of Ramses ones for Egypt, no overpowered Praetorians, Indian elephants etc.)

Bigger battles( 40 units per battle)

Choice with prisoners(releasing, enslaving or killing,) as well as the option to subjugate if you capture a factions last settlement.

    Three victory conditions

    And a whole lot more

    - name of the game... can I say what I don't like?

sure, but don't spam bad things, that is not what this threads about.

Naval invasions are fun, combat is fun (even if the AI is dumb), it's nice to play as Sparta (even though it's paid DLC), music is kinda nice but besides the title screen music unmemorable.

There are a lot of things to like bout it, but the pros are far and wide outweighed by the cons.

I agree with most of them points, definitely the CAI is a highlight, that sort of thing. I actually really, really don't mind the campaign, it works fine in my opinion. But yeah Fallen Phalangite, cons outweigh the pros at the moment...

Indeed, discussing the issues with the game is pointless, since it's been said to death and back. It's playable, but not nearly as fun as its predecessors were.

Somehow people still find a way to complain.

    What's good about Rome 2.

    - Graphics and effects are fantastic
    - Armies tend to be large more often than small.
    - Naval battles are good if you know what you're doing. Naval warships now kick the butt of transport ships 20 fleet (me) vs 20 transports (ai). I sunk them all and lost none.
    - Edicts are awesome
    - Diplomacy works and is important (you need to know what you're doing though because the like/dislike factors is often misleading)
    - Ambushes are more common and useful than any previous title
    - The different army/navy stances
    - Agents are loads more useful that previous titles
    - Time period (ancient - you can't beat it)
    - Unlimited trade routes
    - Combined land and naval battles
    - 4 free ladders for a walled city assault. Other siege equipment are good too
    - Huge number of factions
    - Largest Total War campaign map so far
    - Multiplayer Campaigns are great
    - Empire/Republic choice after civil war for Rome and Carthage
    - Legion legacies
    - Variety of battle map possibilities
    - Forming unions or confederacies for some factions
    - Additive public order system
    - Armies/regions can starve
    - Tech tree is useful and easy to grasp
    - Wonders
    - Auxiliary troops type depends on region
    - Victory conditions can include allies territory

Can't think of any more right now. Of course there are cons to the game, but this thread isn't asking about them. There are cons to every game.
Medieval 2 Total War Blitz Record with the Turks - 14 turns!
Medieval 2 Total War Peasant Campaign Challenge with Egypt - 112 regions - 27 turns to spare!

The army names and history are a wonderful idea, you can get really attached to them unlike the the generals and also the province system is a cool idea.

Those are quiet a few features but somehow one of most important features that makes R2 battles unique is always missing.
A feature that will prevent me to go back to any former TW game and was in my eyes the most important step forward to realism: Line of Sight

and also the list I posted in another thread times ago (just what came into my mind that time):

    - huge feedback on diplomacy not just from your own faction to others but of all the faction network
    - deep dimplomatic impact due to all actions [tactical]
    - legion attributes (they are not nameless soldiers)
    - limited building space per region [tactical]
    - techtree in addition to the building tree
    - unmounting
    - choice for general unit [tactical]

    - traps ... [tactical]

Like the work done for the battle ambiance. How soldiers encourage themselves and try to intimidate their enemies.
The line of sight feature allows for some interesting development.

That's about the only things I like about this TW except the era.

I like the era,the cinematic camera (by far the best feature of this game),the army cap and the way the water looks in the battles (it's just beautiful). But that's pretty much it.I dislike the rest.

Stances. LIke forced march, makes you capable of using strategy at a high level like famous generals. Outsmarting your enemy in marching was always very important.

Many options in battle. You can actually select famous battle formations. While blobbing is still annoying you have many options in battle. Using inspire, dismount, formations, terrain, etc. are very good experience.

Diplomacy. Many times it works. Your allies may help you, you may get money from someone to join a war, etc. The AI seems to accept many good offers (even if not all of them.)

Edicts and provinces. You feel like controlling an empire not a bunch of cities.

    Army traditions.

    No more fantasy egyptians.

Political intrigue. Your faction is now exists in a true political territory. You have inner power groups, intrique. (Still i miss family tree too.)

    Only thing I like is

    Sword and Shield combat style
Its easy to make war with others, its never been easy when we need a peace.

This user... this user demonstrates a new level of complexity and intelligence for the human race. Bravo, chap, bravo!

But seriously, over the last few days I've come to the conclusion that I could actually enjoy Rome II for what it is rather than what it could have been, if not only for a few things they don't seem to want to fix...

    - Battle AI. I mean the core, thinking part of the AI. Not just tweaks to make the AI walk more than run, etc etc.
    - Siege overhaul. Don't know if it's possible... something to bring back the old feel of sieges. Not the gate rushing ones we have now.

Other than that, I'm starting to play Rome II a little more, with the new patches and mods. It's getting there guys.

I like the cities, particularly the unique ones.
    The wildlife
    The diversity of factions
    Legion legacy
    The cinematic camera
    Ability to hide HUD
    Auxiliaries
    Combined battles and port sieges
    700 units
    naval battles

The voice acting is very good (well except when the Barbarian suddenly morphs into his drunk voice from his normal barb voice)
