Default unpacking files problem / windows 8

I installed medieval 2 total war and kingdoms expansions. Medieval 2 total war plays.

I than go to run the unpacker so I can get access to the data files but the PC says I am missing ms(three other letters).dll file.

I do a disk scan through administrator in the command prompt. computer says nothing is wrong basically.

About to pull my hair out trying to figure a way around this. I thought about running the unpacker on another computer and than transferring the files over by flash drive.

any idea what is causing this?

Also tried to play a RODG mod that I added in but the computer than says that I need to update my operating system to at least windows 98 or above to play the game *facepalm*

Those are the Microsoft .dlls in the main Medieal2 folder and need to be copied the the unpacker folder.

Win 8 problem, log in as Administrator, disable the UAC in the registry, take ownership/control of C: drive, and install the game as far from Program Files (x86) as you can get it. This game is too old for Ballmer's kids' BS.

I thought they would have simplified this issue with windows 8. I suppose the problem is just as bad as with Vista.

Microsoft has added two layers to the UAC since Vista. It's getting harder for the "old" programs.

I plan on doing all installation with UAC off and placing it in the games folder.

However once the game and all of its mods are installed will I be able to play the game and all of the mods without UAC creating duplicate files in the other folders.

In other words if the files are in the game folder windows will not mettle with them?... and I can keep UAC on?

also does windows 8 have a good compatability mode to run older games through or is it horrible like xps and vista?

I have no duplicates in Win 7 and had none in Vista so I would think not. Old programs like this, leave the UAC off. It causes more problems than it helps. For a single user computer there is no real reason for it unless you have children you're trying to lock out of certain areas, folders, etc. but those have always existed even before UAC was added but Microsoft did not make it the first layer and one had to do his own homework.

Have mine set as "Run as Administrator" and "XP Compatible", vanilla and mods. They did not remove it in Win 8.

    hi,
sorry to necro here...but I thought it would be better than opening a new thread.

I also have a problem with win 8 and the unpacker for the gold edition of medieval 2.
Just with me the unpacker works...just the files for the addons just wonīt unpack.
I tried reinstalling the game. The UAC is turned down. I am in controll of my drive.

As I said, I use the "unpack all", the main game gets itīs data, just the mods donīt receive any.
Has anybody around here got any advice
    thx.

Each Kingdoms campaign has its own unpacker.

well in my unpacker folder theres is only "unpack all"....
but I downloaded the "missing unpack files for the gold edition" (comming with the bat files + msvcr71.dll/msvcp71.dll) from the internet, place them in my "unpacker folder", run the bat file and it starts unpacking, but after itīs done, there are still no files in the mod folder
