Rome TW - Crashes After/Before Battles - Windows 7 PC

Any help would be greatly appreciated regarding the regular crashes to desktop I am experiencing. They are occurring mostly after a battle and stats screen when game tries to load back to the campaign map (I have had the occasional crash before battles too). Other than these crashes the game runs perfectly and smooth in battles with huge units. I am playing the vanilla version of the game patched to 1.5, in windowed mode for both battles & campaign. My PC is an I7 930, NVidia gtx580 and 12gb ram.

Try turning off auto save in your preferences file and do not use the quick save option.

Save manually as often as possible. I frequently save on the screen before entering a battle, especially if it is a siege battle.
