battle replays

When I save and replay a battle, it is different from the actual battle that was fought. Why is this? Is it some lame attempt by CA to save on resources?

What a save replay does is remember your cursor and key actions and then using the same units basically refights the battle using these. If you are using different setting from the original battle (larger unit size, different difficulty level, etc) then you could very well have a different outcome.
