Default Why did they siege then????

I play Vanilla, BI and RTR and it happens everywhere. A town is under siege although you have superior forces inside. But instead of retreating right away on the campaign map the enemy waits until a) the battle map has loaded b) you have squeezed out all (or half) of your forces through tiny city gates.

Sometimes, to top it, you even get an embarrasing "close victory" message, although those suckers ran right away!!!!

Does anybody know how to change that? Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Run your general and cavalry out first and fast. Catch as many as you can.

I know what you mean guys, but it becomes old. If a country besieges the same city year after year after year. I mean they should learn their lesson after a while. Those cowards, its always "to the hills, run for it" as soon as my mighty general opens the town gate. First it was fun to catch one or two leftbehind units but now I sometimes wish I could build a giant brick wall to block their escape route and just wipe them all out, burn their bodies, put salt on their graves and whatnot... (feel the love, feel the frustration)

Usually they are being dumb and hoping that a) you won't attack b) that you won't bring up reenforcements and wait for the settlement timer to reach zero. Remember they play by the computer's rules and most computers won't sally forth without a clear advantage and they treat you the same way. Except for one problem you aren't a computer and you don't play by the same rules over and over.
