    Default Byzantine Empire

Thier is a Problem with including the Byzantine Empire. The problem is that it never existed. Byzantine is a false name made up by in recent years. No one ever called them the Byzantine Empire. They were the Roman Empire, or Eastern Roman if you prefer. Does anyone else agree that this Giantgantic error should be fixed?
When there's lightning - it always bring me down
Cause it's free and I see that it's me
    Who's lost and never found
I cry for magic - I feel it dancing in the light
But it was cold - I lost my hold
To the shadows of the night

There's no sign of the morning coming
You've been left on your own
Like a Rainbow in the Dark

Do your demons - do they ever let you go
When you've tried - do they hide -deep inside
Is it someone that you know
You're a picture - just an image caught in time
    We're a lie - you and I
    We're words without a rhyme

There's no sign of the morning coming
You've been left on your own
Like a Rainbow in the Dark

When there's lightning - it always brings me down
Cause it's free and I see that it's me
    Who's lost and never found
Feel the magic -feel it dancing in the air
    But it's fear - and you'll hear
    It calling you beware

There's no sign of the morning coming
There's no sight of the day
You've been left on your own
Like a Rainbow in the Dark

    19th century historians did.

    I don't think it's that big of a problem.

CA's intent is not necessarily to make sure the game is 100% accurate, its to sell games. And I think them calling them the Byzantines will be something trivial if you are going to pick apart their accuracy (if this is anything like BI at least, Hounds of Culaan ). But hey, thats what the mods are for.

what is the deal with this nitpicking?

it's a commonly accepted notation and designation for the area formerly known as the eastern roman empire. contemporary historians use it, it should be good enough for you.

or do you continue to call istanbul constantinople?

Correction: Constantinople is the old city, Istanbul is the new metropolis.

Not a big problem, though you are correct, a few people at the nothwestern coast of Turkey called themselves Romans up to the early 20th century, Byzantium was indeed the Eastern Roman Empire, hence Imperium Romanum lasted, not until 472, but 1453.

Oh well, Byzantine Empire sounds cooler than "Eastern Romans" anyways.

yeah, and Byzantine only comes from the Byzaz, the region where it's located. it's like what the greeks called it or something.

I wonder if calling the Byzantines "Romioi" might be better. If I'm not mistaken, this is what they called themselves, since the word "Hellene" had a pagan conotation, and thus was undesirable.
Small correction: they called themselves "Romaioi"

Anyway it's up to the modteams to change these kind of things. Byzantine empire is generally accepted, but Roman empire is not wrong either...

While not trying to flame the original poster it CA has and will make compromises to make the Total War series more acceptable to the masses. CA is hardly the only company guilty of this sin. As an example, how often do you hear Egypt referred to as Amratia?

Meh. Seeing as how I don't speak Greek, a typo should be expected, I suppose. "Romaioi" does make more sense, though, since Rome was called 'Roma'.

And yeah, as soon the mod community gets a hold of M2TW, most of these little things will be changed anyways, so there's no real sense in bugging CA about them.

Unless they make the game difficult to mod, in which case let the rioting begin.

Some Greeks are still called Romans in Turkey. Greeks in Turkey and Cyprus are called 'Rum' or Roman. However, Greeks in Greece are called 'Yunan' for Ionian. :hmmm:

    Just a little trivia.

Roman Empire was given a new name, Byzantine Empire in the 19th century.

This cannot be considered as a historical error but more as a feature to better distinguish times between ancient Roman Empire and Hellenic Roman Empire.

Constantinoples ancient name was Byzantium, so it that was only natural choise to name Hellenic Roman Empire as Byzantine Empire.

From a historical perspective everyone refers to the byzantine empire as exactly that the Byzantine Empire, just as you said. I don't understand why the topic starter would claim issue with this. This is what all modern historians call it. Referring to it as the roman empire or the greek empire (as it was referred by western kingdoms during the middle ages) would be confusing to everyone.
