Ive made a medium lance unit with a shield on their backs, now my problem is -
1.how do I get them to use it in melee?
2.when I dismount the unit the shield isnt there anymore.

Im using the roman_man_lance_cavalry animation.

You need to change your animation to "rome_man_spear_shield_cavalry" since "roman_man_lance_cavalry" doesn't have any shield animations (lance is 2-handed weapon, hence no shield)

Maybe the shield can be attached in the shoulder like the phalanx do
