Default On the subject of a Barbarian Invasion 2 expansion pack...

While I know we the community are ages away from wanting a Barbarian Invasion expansion pack, I thought it would be prudent to have a thread dedicated to discussing what we would like to see in it. While I don't expect any of the ideas and thoughts expressed in this thread to actually make in into the aforementioned Expansion, you just never know, so do feel free to contribute.

Mainly, I think it would be interesting to see the expansion become part of the main game, as well as a game in and of itself. What I mean is that I would like to see the game timeline be extended from whatever year the game 'finishes' at the moment (I cbf to play a campaign all the way through yet) to the historical fall of Rome in 476. That way the game actually feels like you're playing through the rise and fall of the Roman Empire (or whichever faction you happen to be playing as). Or, if you'd rather just start from the beginning of the expansion, you can have the option to do so in the campaign menu (ala Shogun and Medieval I).

I get that there would be a lot of transitioning pains that would come with integrating the expansion into the timeline of the main game, especially considering the introduction of new factions (via hordes or them automatically receiving their given territories), changes in technology and unit types, and the eventual schism between East and West. Or it could be done simply with a cut scene and a jump 50-100 years into the future, with new unit rosters, technology, and all the new factions in their places (regardless of whether they were there at that time historically or not), with some minor adjustments to your held territories to accommodate for the changes. But if done correctly I believe it would give the game some of the spark it desperately needs to make it more fun. Just imagine how the political system could be improved if, rather than the occasional political decision, you had to actively deal with Saxon emissaries asking for permission to migrate and settle in your territories.

Do you want to know what i think?
I think the more we talk about our favorites then the less CA will represent them!
So i think the only thing that we can do is to deny our friends to buy any more game of this disgusting studio!

I can see your point of view Fallen, but i think there are so many new factions involved in the Late Empire period that having a Barbarian Invasion style expansion with a different map and starting date would be a better option - though i suppose they could use the emergent faction mechanic in Rome II to do it. I think there are already far too many irrelevant and historically out of period factions in Rome II (e.g Nasamones, Garamantines) that many of them need cut out of the game entirely or replaced by rebels before any more could be added though - the AI turns already take far too long once you get a couple of dozen turns into the game.

of course, and you would want to play as those factions as well, which would involve starting the game in the expansion era. I get that, but a gradual fluid transition from empire to late empire would be a neat feature, plus it would give depth and connection to the game; give you intrinsic insight into the changing dynamics of the empire throughout the first few centuries AD.

That, or playing the campaign as its historical borders.

I wouldnt know, I dont have the patience, nor is the game engaging enough, for me to last more than a few dozen turns before I quit and start over.

I've tried RS2, but after nearly a decade of playing and replaying Rome and re-replaying, I just couldn't get into.
