Armor and weapon upgrades visible?

I heard somewhere that there are 2 types of weapon/armour upgrades, a passive looking one and another which shows up. The passive ones are gained through the training tree, the visual ones are gained through the seige weapon tree through the workshop. So dose the workshop armor and weapons upgrades really effect units visually?

They don't show up visually, except on unit cards. I asked this same question earlier myself.

I think only Medieval 2 had the armor upgrades showing up. Maybe in Medieval 3, we'll see the concept return.
But far as I can tell in my experience in the Roman campaign, the upgrades have no visual effect.
