Default CRITICAL UPDATE - SOLUTION FOUND for the "Game won't start" issue of Patch 5!

ANNOUNCEMENT: A temporary solution has been found for the gamers whose the game has been patched with the new Patch 5 and is not running at all when they click the PLAY button on the Total War Launcher. - So, if your game has been patched with Patch 5 and refuses to run, then follow the solution below - it worked for both me and others!:

    1) Go to the game's installation directory in Steam -

for 32-bit Windows users, this usually is the following:
    <your hard drive>\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\Common\Total War Rome II

    and for 64-bit Windows users:
<your hard drive>\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steamapps\Common\Total War Rome II

    2) Find the ROMEII.exe and right-mouse click it. Choose "Properties" from the context menu.

    3) In the "Properties", Go to the "Compatibility" Tag and here, untick the box next to "Run this program as an administrator".

    4) Try your game and... profit! Now Rome II will finally launch when you click the PLAY button on the TW Launcher! Somehow the Patch 5 messed the "Run as admin" option and the game no longer runs with this option checked. This solution worked both on me and 3 more players. Hope it will work for you as well!

Sorry but it took more than 2 days to find what is causing the new problem. We had no official response by CA, and so, we had to dig and find for ourselves why the players were unable to run their games anymore, since Patch 5 came live, and here we go! Apparently the Patch #5 for Rome II Total War is conflicting with some privileges or the User Account Control system of the Windows. Creative Assembly will need fix this asap.

A big thanks to all teammates and friends in this awesome community for their very valuable help!

That blew me away. "Turn on the TV," he'd say. "What are you seeing? People selling their products? No. People selling the fear of you having to live without their products." freakin' A, was he right. Fear of aging, fear of loneliness, fear of poverty, fear of failure. Fear is the most basic emotion we have. Fear is primal. Fear sells.” WWZ

Yeah. No wonder that I never have the problem of running the game at all since the beginning.

Like LestaT said, there is a good chance that your game won't start if there are outdated mods in your Data folder. Make sure that you don't have outdated mods in your game's Data folder, ensure you don't have Run as Admin checked, and try if the Run in Compatibility Mode could bring any better luck., or like ElvenKind said, install game on different hard drive.

Good old VirtualStore and UAC problems..

There are two other ways to deal with this:

    1. Edit Security for your main RTW II folder and take Full Control over it ( it is explained in my thread how to do this: click on EK's Install Thread link in my signature, and apply instructions which are explained for M2TW )

    2. Install/ move Rome II to any other place, just not in Program Files or Program Files (x86) folder.

Sons of *******, leave that poor, war torn country in peace.
If you are a citizen of one of these countries, then DO NOT ask any help from me on these forums, since, in protest against this aggression by your governments, I do not provide assistance/help anymore.
Let Syria be finally in peace.

Since I upgraded from XP to Win7 I have always installed games on different drive and not to program files and (almost) never had any problems. I think some UAC issue might be playing problems updating the patch for some.

Yes, damn UAC, it thinks someone is messing around with files in protected folders like Program Files folder, and, it doesn't allow you to actually make HARMLESS changes you want to make. Like, install mods, make changes in .txt folders etc..

you mean the only modern OS that didnt have such a basic security system like protecting important files, and when it does people go raving complaining about it?

UAC is good, UAC for people that worked as sys admin was one hell of godsend

Yes, UAC is good for some things, it was developed for large networks primarily to stop the plebs installing unapproved unauthorised extraneous software. Unfortunately, UAC, even in Win 7 is too intrusive for a lot of software and will just stop or severely slow down certain types of software including games.

And, for me as a Home User UAC is not good, and I have turned it off.

However, I do not reccomend users to turn it off, better to change the Security for the folder in question, or, install games outside of Program Files and Program Files(x86).

UAC doesn`t even trust Steam apparently, even though, Steam has Admin rights? .

Would the game not work even if I only use mods that change the skins of some units?

    every app has admin rights

and when you compare a decent OS like unix or linux in terms of UAC and windows... its pathetic.

UAC was developed for every one, not just companies

i did this and now the launcher just closes and the game doesnt even load up, before the red load screen would come up and then just close out, so this actually took me a step backwards, are there any other suggestions?

holy , it randomly started working after i took it out of compatibility mode, so i first: switched the run in admin mode, then i put it in compatibility mode, and then i switched it back to normal and it started working.........so......yea......
