    Default Roman army

Hello all. I got the newest patch and went through the units in unmodded custom battle. Much to my delight, the pike phalanx holds the line and defeated the Oathsworn in 1on 1 combat. The hoplite phalanx is really useless..... I expect a fix on them being offensive phalanx and not defensive.
What I don't understand is how the Oathsworn defeat the Praetorian Guard, the best Roman unit, with ease. Why are the Romans made so weak????

Becuase Oathsworn are a more of a relative elite than the Praetorians are, in fact the Praetorian Guard was mainly a ceremonial force and usually even less skilled than frontline legionaries, their only advantage were perhaps their better equipment. The elite of the Roman army was the first cohorts. In comparison the Oathsworn are a handpicked elite of the very best warriors in all of Gaul, it is no wonder that they easily walk over the ceremonial guards. Also do not complain as Roman regular infantry easily wins against Gallic regular infantry in the game.

Yeah, I know what the Praetorians are. I'm talking game now. No roman unit can defeat them in 1 on 1 combat. I'm cheching the best units. Maybe they should bring back the Urban Cohort .

    Better yet, the Arcani!

I think that if they want to up the Romans more I think they should perhaps bring in the late Roman Clibinarii.

Maybe on Barbarian Invasion 2. Followed by its own series of patches of course. But first, lets see how Rome 2 patching season 2 goes.

it doesnt make sense to mention anything historcial when explaining the balance in this game, because here is nothing historical. everything is balanced, even if they had to use complete fantasy units to balance things out. it s like Empire/Shogun all over again. so, it s only reasonable to expect that 2 elite units would be also balanced and of similar strength.

I'm not expecting anything historical unless a modder says his team will do it. It just doesn't seem right that the Oathsworn can defeat any roman unit with ease. The game being what it is, that is.

Hehe maybe gladiators should be made the ultimate Roman elite unit then, that would be fun to watch.

In the era covered by the game, praetorians were actually some of the most elite units in the Roman army. Their reputation for puffed up palace dwellers came later in the empire. During this time period they were specially picked body gods of Roman generals pulled from the best fighters of the front line legions.

Yes, but they were not organized into cohorts, nor were they known as the Praetorian guard. Realistically, they would be General's bodyguard units. In fact, I believe elite spam could be solved by making elites accessible only as general's bodyguards, which would also be realistic. The ambacti/soldurii depicted by Oathsworn were, likewise, the vassals of kings or lords and not independent units.

There are 2 Praetorian units in this game, the Praetorians and the Praetorian Guard. The one you are referring to are the Praetorians, but the one represented as the best of their roster are the Praetorian Guards and they are indeed the palace dwellers.

Praetorian Guard is the last unit in the Roman roster, therefore the best they have. That's all. It's not about who they were or weren't. They should be the best unit in the game. Or at least almost the best.
