Default UNLIMITED VIDEO MEMORY GONE GRAPHICS CARD MEMORY REDUCED IN HALF AFTER PATCH 5

As the title itself explains, i was having a blast with my patch 4 rome II game with the STIM Mod and other minor mods. However after patch 5 playing with vanilla (since some mods are not updated to patch 5 yet) i noticed crashes and the game telling me that my video memory is not enough to process the entire battle and has thus decreased the settings. When i checked my advanced options the "unlimited video memory" option is no longer tick-able or checkable and my graphics which is 1600mb has decreased to 800mb according to ROME II... wtf? i dont understand what has happened as everything was working perfectly fine prior to patch 5.

I came here hoping that someone has a solution to this problem as my ROME II is basically running on low settings despite the fact that i was playing in the mid-high settings beforehand.
I have done a bit of searching on the net hoping that a thread has a solution to this problem already but i have encountered none and a thread similar to this was posted on a steamcommunity website but also has no solutions thus far. Hoping that this thread could catch the attention of more people and hopefully find a solution to this problem.

Same problem here. Everything fine before patch 5. Now the "unlimited video memory" box is greyed out so i can't use ultra textures anymore.

I can't verify this but it may be that patch 5's recent claims to reduce the graphical footprint by 200 might mean we all have unlimited video on by default assuming you have patch. But i also noticed that it's more graphic card appropriate in terms of [ the game ] will automatically adjust your system to a minimum acceptable frame rate? (again i cannot verify this.) But I also noticed that low settings have been improved slightly... if you don't agree you can see it when you zoomed out on low settigns that the mens legs appear blurred and blobbed into mesh. Not any longer, at least not for me.

okay some people have this problem while other's don't. It's mentioned in the other thread i found on the net that this might be a problem with laptops only (this is not verified) but yea because of patch 5 my graphics memory turned from 1600mb to 800mb why? no longer able to tick unlimited graphics memory as well as unable to choose higher graphics settings. My graphics card isn't all that great and maybe ROME II is limiting my settings but i managed with a mid-high setting at a reasonable 20fps before so why am i being constricted with this now? urghh.. luckily im still on break with ROME II until a few of the MODS im using are updated but it is still frustrating

I have the same problem. I am now restricted to medium/high settings despite being able to run the game comfortably on very high/ultra. Laptop, 7970m.

I've tried changing the unlimited gpu memory option in the preferences from false to true, but it has no effect.

Is it possible to revert to patch 4?

UPDATE: I'm at work now, but will try this later - poster has an 8970m running on a Clevo chassis.

Go into preferences.txt (run>appdata>roaming>CA>Rome 2>scripts> preferences) open it with notepad (make sure it isnt read only)

Find gfx_memory (about the 10th to 15th line down) it should say 0. Instead of 0 put in "-2000" (include the minus sign), close txt and save when asked. Load up game, go to graphics options screen, look at your memory. SHould now say 4GB (but still the Intel). Run the benchmark again with the same settings. Look at the textures.

OK, I tried the fix above and it changes the VM in the GFX to 4095MB. But all options better than high are greyed out, as is UVM. I have set all the GFX variables in the preferences script to 5 (ultra) but I'm not convinced it makes any difference - certainly in-game GFX options don't recognise those changes. It is definitely using my dedicated card rather than the integrated one.

In-game performance is not as bad as I feared (don't misunderstand that to be a good thing!). I didn't take any screenshots before P5 so I have no objective comparison point - for the most part it looks OK(ish) but definitely not as good as before P5. Some zombie faces appearing (never happened to me before) and texture quality seems to vary greatly (which seems weird). Changing GFX settings in battle causes black patches to appear and units to float instead of march (never happened before).

I haven't tested extensively, but given that the game looked much better before P5, I'm feeling a bit diddled right now. Hopefully CA will reverse whatever changes they made to force lower settings upon us. I didn't have a performance issue in the first place! I can live with paying for something that's not as good as I hoped for, but I'm struggling with having my product downgraded for no good reason...

just as a secondary reference to Ogami Itto i also tried the above solution only to come up with the same problem as i cannot change the settings any higher that "high". In addition these changes does have a relatively different look to the game. (for example particle effects from high to very high has a noticeable difference). This which was an option i could check was available to me in patch 4 but not in patch 5 despite the fact that my game is running fine with good fps.

hopefully CA will fix this problem next patch as given the amount of other problems CA has to address, this shouldn't even be a problem at all. Just revert back to patch 4 in regards to this please..

anyway hoping that someone has a solution to this..

See this thread on the Total War forums. CHG has edited the boot.pack and I am now able to set all GFX options to ultra and the UVM box is tickable again - so just as we were before P5.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think he has just added the 7970M to the list of supported GPUs. You might want to ask how he did it if your card isn't listed in the boot.pack. At least, I think that's what's happened!
